Joe Handley Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Dad and I were going to take a lunch break at I-Hobby and we started t walk past a small booth with a big card board cut out that read Tenax 7R When that finally processed, let out with "You guys are back?!" to which they replied "Yes and we're trying to get the word out." They're working on getting their old supply chain back together, including Great Planes, Stevens Int., and Walthers (model railroad supplies and accessories) as well as several others as well as letting retailers know they're making a comeback. I told them between what I've read on here and from talking to customers at work, there should be many, many happy people to hear this. I think that made their day too!
Brett Barrow Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I used to love that stuff, but between it getting hard/impossible to find & just plain evaporating too fast, (even in a tightly sealed bottle), I switched to Ambroid liquid cement. Works just as well as Tenax 7R, easy to get, & doesn't evaporate in the bottle. I ain't going back to Tenax. Good stuff to be sure, but I've found a better alternative. easy to get - Not right now it's not!!! We haven't seen Ambroid come though in several months. Tenax has been back for about 3-4 months, been getting plenty of it.
Brett Barrow Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Hmmm, that's odd, the Hobbytown I frequent keeps Ambroid in, or has, while the Tenax vanished. Admittedly I haven't bought any in 6 months or so, & things could have changed. I'd recommend buying an extra bottle or two. They've been known to go about a year or so between shipments of the Liquid Cement. We did get their balsa airplane tube cement back in a while back, that stuff had been gone for about 5 years!!!

CAL Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Yeah, in spite of everything the supply of Tenax at my LHS never dried up and I stocked up just in case.
Longbox55 Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I used to use Tenax, too. But, for the same reasons mark mentions, I switched to a different product. I've become rather partial to Tamiya Super Thin, which works very well. I've also tried the Ambroid, which I also like. I can find both easily, my SLHS has the Tamiya in stock all the time, I get the Ambroid at the Hobbytown in Castleton when I make a trip to Indy. They've always seemed to have both in stock every time I go. Tenax has been off and on with them, they did have it last time I was there, which was about a month ago. I've also experimented with aome unconventional solvent adhesives, namely Xyline, which was suggested by Art Anderson. So far, my own luck with it has been so-so, might be the brand I'm using, as it's an "environmentally freindly" variant.
highway Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 Ok, either I must have been living in a cave, or there just is not much of a demand for Tenax around here, because my all of my LHSs always have it in stock. I must agree with Bluesman Mark though, I prefer Ambroid ProWeld over Tenax, which my LHSs also keep pretty well stocked. I don't know if it's Tenax or just me, but I just have not had good luck using Tenax, and the fact I can also get the Ambroid cheaper is a big plus, too. One of the LHSs I deal with a lot carries the Ambroid 2 oz bottles for $3.69, and Tenax is $3.39 for the 1 oz bottles.
charlie8575 Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I just stick with Testors, personally. I find it works well, can be obtained easily and does what I need. However, it's also become quite expensive, for that reason, I'm thinking of trying the Tamiya cement. It's less money and everyone I know who's used it liked it. Charlie Larkin
sjordan2 Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 One thing I've always liked about Ambroid is how smoothly it lays down. I did an experiment a couple of years ago using it as an adhesive for chrome foil, and compared to four other liquid cements it was the only one that showed no texture under the foil. Also good for fabric on seats (though I only tried it on larger scale seats of 1/16 and 1/12).
my80malibu Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 The Hobby Town that I go to has a bunch of the stuff. If you ask them for it, they look at you with a blank stare and ask what is that for.
Junkman Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I used Tenax 7R for ages, but it has been unavailable in Europe for years. I'm now hooked on EMA Plastic Weld, which I find is exactly the same, but UK-made, hence readily available. Not sure whether it is available in the colonies, but if it is, and you can't get Tenax, it's well worth to give it a try.
Tony T Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 I've had no trouble getting Tenax. To reduce the evaporating, I put the closed bottle into a ziplock bag between workbench sessions. Seems to help it last longer in my experience.
