As a longtime ad agency copywriter and TV producer, this goes against everything I know about strategic positioning and relevance to the client's business. Except it's wonderful, one of my favorite TV spots out there. Brilliant.

I love this every time I see it. Except...as an advertising professional and not necessarily as an old fogey (which I am)... I can never remember who the advertiser is or what they're selling.

The older folks among us will remember two very famous, cool and funny Alka-Seltzer campaigns, "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" and "That's a SPICY meatball." Problem was, they didn't resonate with viewers and sales actually went down during the campaigns' run and they were yanked. When I was working at McCann-Erickson on the Exxon account, this is what we used to call "vampire video," where the execution sucked the life out of the sales proposition.

But I still love this spot.

These rank pretty far up on my favorite list, but I think the funniest commerical of the year so far in my book is the one with the rattlesnake with the baby rattle tail!

Is that the one with the rabbits laughing at him? Once again, I don't know who the advertiser is.

Another favorite ad: Animals who naturally prey on each other playing together at an African waterhole, with a very catchy tune, "Can't we get along?" I don't know who the advertiser is here, either. It reminds me of the recent, great GE commercials, but it isn't GE.

My favorite at the moment is the ad for Geico with R Lee Ermy as a therapist.

Patient: I think that is why yellow makes me sad

Drill Sgt therapist: That's interesting, you wanna know what makes me sad? YOU DO! Why don't we take the bus to namby pamby land you jack wagon... Tissue? (bounces tissue box off of patient's head).

I like the commercial but what I don't get is, why hamsters???

Well, Skip, I appreciate where you are coming from, but I think they are doing a very credible job of selling this product to their target market. First, Kia is not expecting to break into the over 45 market with this vehicle....it is intended for the youth market....actually, it is intended for the youth market that was in love with the Scion (Toyota) brand. The Scion is represented by the toaster and the cardboard box.

They are saying to the "hip youth market", represented by the hip young rappers, You can go with this, the hip Kia Soul, or you can go with that out of touch, out of date square old Scion, represented by the toaster, washing machine and cardboard box....I even think they are saying that the Honda Element, Nissan Cube (current "Worlds ugliest Car", in my opinion and the Scion are the boxes, but the Kia is the cool "hipmobile" of today.

The other, effective message here is that you are either "part of the rat race running on a hamster wheel or you are hip, with it and driving one of their cars.....break out of the rat race, they are saying.

Look, I am an old fart too, and I would never purchase any of the above mentioned boxes on wheels, but a clever cute advertising campaign is a clever cute advertising campaign. When ever I hear that music, I think of Kia Soul. Its like that 4 note jiggle that Intel has.....forever I will think of Intel when I hear that. Just saying!

Love it, even though Geico breaks all the rules. They have a strange kind of continuity – it's a stew of a gecko, cavemen and other weird stuff, but they always connect you to the brand. And I love the "Whee, whee" piggy commercial, which is also for Geico.

It's weird that a staid industry like car insurance currently has some of the more memorable TV commercial "spokespeople"... the little gecko for Geico, "Flo" for Progressive, the "Mayhem" guy for Allstate.

When did auto insurance get so clever???

LOL, Harry, when they started making billions of dollars, off teenagers alone they make a bundle!

Yes, Skip, that's the one. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it's for The Traveler's Insurance Company. I'll try to make sure the next time I see it.

I think the commerical I just replied to Skip also applies with what you said, Harry. If I remember correctly, the baby rattle on the rattlesnake is symbolizing not to accept cheap replacement parts on your car. Again, next time I see the commerical, I'll try to check to make sure.

Those are all brilliant, and they illustrate the importance of continuity (which Geico ignores and gets away with all the time).

I thought Dennis Haysbert for Allstate was one of the best old-time, stand-up spokespersons I'd seen in a long time, in a very straight and traditional way, because he has real charisma and authority. But this "mayhem" guy who replaces him and is 180 degrees different, breaks new ground, and I think he's going to be a star. His name is Dean Winters, and he reminds me of a fabulous actor named Walton Goggins, who plays bad guy Boyd Crowder on "Justified" (one of my most recent guilty pleasures).

Hey, I love it, and I'm over 45. One of my favorite commercials is for some credit card company(even though I don't use credit cards) with a bunch of Vikings causing havoc. The best is where they spot the poor Roman actors, although I'm a little concerned about them being with the goat. LOL

I believe that is for Capitol One.

I'm in the age group that the Kia Soul is aimed at, and I will never buy one. I think they are incredibly ugly, even with the larger "custom" wheels. Why buy a car that isn't nice to look at? What's worse, they are slow and unappealing. The commercial is kind of odd in that the rap style is '80s, but people young enough to really remember '80s music are in their mid 30s on average. All of the people I know in their 30s aren't looking for a cheap "hipster" car, they like the cars that are a mixture of performance, style, decent economy (read decent, not excellent), and something that can be modified tastefully.... like BMW (M3), Lexus (IS & IS-F), Cadillac (CTS Coupe), etc. Others like the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Chevy Camaro, Ford Mustang, and Dodge Challenger. A few I know have driven the Kia Forte Koup, which is not a bad car, but it looks just like a Civic so that's why they chose something else, because it's a copycat car. It's a very nice driving car, but it's too small for someone with kids.... who would rather get a 4dr performance car (STi, Lancer EVO, Civic SI 4dr, etc). Problem is, both Kias are aimed at young people who probably can't afford one yet, but there are better alternatives that are all a few years old that can be had if you really compare. It's funny that they think Scions are econoboxes, it's the pot calling the kettle black. At least you can get a TRD Supercharger for the Scions, lol.

Maybe Kia should switch the commercial from the Soul to the Forte Koup? I've heard rumors that there will be a performance version coming out in a couple years....

Also I love the "Mayhem Guy" commercials, they crack me up. Also the older Geico Caveman commercials, I loved those. My favorite commercial has to be the Orbit Gum one with the Love triangle, lol "WHO ARE YOU CALLING A COOTIE QUEEN YOU LINT LICKER!?!":

Just goes to show that violence and antisocial behavior can be funny. Who was the advertiser again?

But I still can't deal with the Budweiser Super Bowl commercial from a few years ago where a sleigh horse's fart gets lighted and burns the babe in the sleigh. There ARE limits.

Ok, I think most of you will find this one REALLY STUPID!!! The first few times I saw this on TV I thought it was lame, childish and poorly executed. But the more I watched it, the more I began to enjoy its "simpleton" approach to marketing. I mean, how many of us have worked with a goof ball like Luke before? Think about it...Go to meeting is saying, Look you can be a screw-up and have poor work habits, but with "Go to meeting" you can have the great equalizer and you too can be a winner. I find it silly, clever and effective...oh, and so bad that I remember it.

i'll be honest here, the main reason i DON'T watch TV is because of commercials.

i do seem to remember a few though that i thought were pretty funny like the one for some oil company using a red haired guy with an accent and exclaiming to "Think with your dipstick, Jimmy!" or one that i think was from one of the past Superbowls that had a football player running down people in an office and tackling them.

The only reason I know that Castrol is the advertiser for "Think with your dipstick, Jimmy" is that I Googled it. I like it because it's ridiculous and suggestive, but it's another example of vampire video.

My daughter and I were discussing this yesterday in regards to vague billboards. There were two in my area, they were..

I Want Sam and I Hate Steven, the I hate Steven was for a jeweler and I had heard it was a very successful ad campaign cause it peaked peoples interest enough to have them Google it and really stuck it their minds.

I Google everything and I think it is pretty common amongst Americans. So companies names plastered everywhere may have an adverse affect as it leaves a bad taste of a pushy corporation. ie.Geico.

Kia's suck, I think the toaster has better lines. The best car commercials were the Dodge and Dodge/Hemi ones.

A couple of my favouites.
