Dr. Cranky Posted November 15, 2010 Author Posted November 15, 2010 LOL, diorama. Who's got time for a diorama when there's yet another 38 Ford waiting to be finished. You heard right, 3 in a row, but hum . . . what is the last one gone to look like. Stay tuned in for a thread titled: The Many Faces of a 38 Ford Pick Up!
mrmike Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 This is looking really good Virgil! I'm liking the details!
Custom Mike Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Virgil, I want to meet you one day so I can bow at the feet of the Master! You are unbelievable, this one looks 100% real, I can't wait to see the third one you're gonna drop on us!
Dr. Cranky Posted November 16, 2010 Author Posted November 16, 2010 Thanks, friends . . . the new beast is fully painted, and the chipping is about to start but this one is a bit more complicated then the last two . . . Lordy, it seems like the last two weeks have gone by scratching a millimeter of paint every other hour . . . I'm getting cross-eyed.
Sixties Sam Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 I just build models, but you make works of art, Cranky! Excellent work! Sam
Dr. Cranky Posted November 16, 2010 Author Posted November 16, 2010 Thanks, Sam . . . stay tuned in for more pictures . . .
vaughn Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Super work Virgil ! What wood did you use for the bed? Have used some of your tips. Good stuff.
Dr. Cranky Posted November 16, 2010 Author Posted November 16, 2010 I never use balsa wood because it is too soft. I use stuff I get from the railroad section, a company name Keppler.
AzTom Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 That weathering is absolutely fantastic! I don't get the holes in the passenger door though, that rib is stamped with the door and not removable. Seeing those rib lines up close bums me out. I just bought one of these kits to replicate a 39 Ford I had and hadn't really looked at it yet. That is still the 37 cab with a 38 nose. AzTom
John Teresi Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Virgil.......the models you build are FANTASTIC.........I really enjoy admiring your builds..........you are an inspiration to me........you are one of my favorite builders........thank you for sharing this AWESOME build.
Dr. Cranky Posted November 16, 2010 Author Posted November 16, 2010 Thanks, John . . . Aztom, it's great you brought this to my attention because I had no idea that the trim is stamped on the body of the real 37 Ford. Goes to show you, Cranky's not all together there! Stay tuned in for more developments on the 3 and final version of this Ford kit . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted November 16, 2010 Author Posted November 16, 2010 All right, maties, the final 37/38 Ford assembly is underway . . . here's the rolling chassis with mocked engine . . . It took me a couple of hours to put the chips in all the right places on the frame . . . A dented hubcap, I think is a nice touch . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted November 16, 2010 Author Posted November 16, 2010 Hum, what could possibly go on this bed . . . ? Well, what do you know, the hairpray coat helped crackle the paint on the engine. I like it although it was totally an accident . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted November 16, 2010 Author Posted November 16, 2010 The chassis on this kit builds up real nice, I like this one best of the three versions I've built so far . . . Stay tuned in for more . . .
AzTom Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 That frame looks sooooo realistic. I need to play with that hair spay stuff, have another torch wagon I need to do. I'm going to try and sand off the ribs, at least the top two and glue small half round styrene strips on to make the 38/39 cab with three ribs. Can't wait to see where this one is heading, looks like 1 ton rear wheels. AzTom
Dr. Cranky Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 Thanks, I really appreciate the comments. Thank you all. Stay tuned in for more progress . . .
Hattley Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 (edited) Dang fine work Cranky! Edited November 17, 2010 by Hattley
MikeMc Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 A dented hubcap, I think is a nice touch . . . No Virgil, it is the ultimate touch!!! B) I have never seen one like that :o What a joy to see your craftsmanship!!
Dr. Cranky Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 Well, you know me, I can't keep a build going without mocking up (thank heavens, it might be mucking it up!) what I have, and so far I have this: I've started to weather some of it, but I am exhausted after the last couple of days of chipping off paint . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 This is the boom I scratch-built last year and had sitting around. Innitially I was going to put it on the back of a 41 Chevy, but this 37/38 Ford won out . . . I still have not chipped the paint off, which is going to be like a whole weekend's worth of madness . . . Everything is pretty much box stock except for the few places where I've lost my mind . . .
Tom Kren Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 SWEEEEEEEET !!!!! Need to get to the bench your build have got me wanting to build a dirty model GREAT JOB!!
Dr. Cranky Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 Go, Tom, go . . . dirty like how dirty? This dirty?
AzTom Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Oh My! A tow truck, don't get any better than that. My favorite type of truck. AzTom
Danno Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Oh, wow! This just keeps getting better and better ...
Dr. Cranky Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 Thanks, maties, and today I have the distinct pleasure of sitting there chipping the paint on the boom . . . I don't even know where to start . . . After that it should be easy to detail and finish the whole thing . . . I am looking forward to a group portrait . . .
