I have an issue with the photo entry.

What if people photo shop or touch-up the entry pictures?

...or maybe even a pic of a real car claiming it to be a model?

I might enter this, might not. The primary deciding factor will be my income over the next few months. On the list are a couple of kits I'd like to get anyway, so it's not that big a deal to me.

Heck, for a shot at a list of prizes like that, I'm willing to subject myself to a little corporate greed.

you can get your kit early

Look over the list of kits that are eligible, purchase any one as the basis for your entry, and be sure to SAVE YOUR RECEIPT. It will validate your entry, and you will be able to show a purchase date prior to the actual contest dates.

This came about because of a direct request to Revell from a number of hobby dealers. They wanted to be able to sell them for the Holidays, and we saw no reason to restrict sales.

I`ve been thinking about this for a while, and I think this is exactly what our hobby needs. For the past decade or so, the future of our hobby has been a frequently discussed topic on the boards. With the popularity of gaming consoles and computers, it is hard to get younger people interested in our hobby which takes alot of patience and little immediate gratification. And by younger, I mean anyone under 40 at this point. Most people associate model building with the "glue bombs" they built as a kid, or others had built. With exposure on national TV, people will be able to see what is *really* possibly with model building. Honestly, if most people saw the work by many of the seasoned builders in here, they would be shocked. I think there is a very large group of viewers who will see this, and realizing they can`t afford to do a full size project, will attempt a model. I also think that alot of younger viewers will see this and think "this is much cooler than my die cast 'toys'", and maybe many others will realize they have been wasting time with car games on XBox when they could use their time to create something tangible, lasting, and something to be proud of. This is a big step toward reaching a large general audience likely not thinking about modeling. The contest isn`t perfect according to our preferences, but it is a start. Maybe next years will be better.

As far as Revell being greedy, I could care less. I am tired of the concern about the future of our hobby because, face it, Revell is the top dog as far as domestic kit manufacturers. Do you really want to build only AMT models, when AMT has no competition and no reason to improve? I hope Revell makes boat loads off of this! It can only serve the good of our hobby, which is what I really care about.

I plan to enter the contest, even though I know next to nothing about hot rods compared to others here on the forum. Also, I hope the full list of rules clarifies "hot rod." Does this include more modern "street rods?" I hope so, as I think that will bring more interest as far as the younger viewers. Does anyone have clarification on this? From the gearz site, it looks like this guy works mostly on older hot rods, and not street rods so much.

I was at the iHobby show where this contest was first announced. Revell doesn't really seem all that concerned about attracting younger builders, at the show they also announced a new marketing campaign focused on over 40 builders and getting them back into the hobby. I'm pretty sure if you checked the demographics of the show Gearz it would be 25+, maybe 35+. Most of the younger viewers of that show are probably watching with their Dads, not a bad way to get a few younger builders but I doubt it will be a huge influx. Revell seems to be focused on older builders now, which is a good thing. Do you think we'd get kits like the Chi-Town Hustler, Hawaiian, and new Midgets if they were focused on 15 year olds ? As far as thinking the hobby won't survive without younger builders, think of the armor/ airplane builders. There are plenty of them who were born after WW2 who build that era of airplane. As long as there are car guys, there will be car modelers.

Also, as far as I can tell any style of build is OK for this contest. Traditional hot rods or modern street rods as long as you start with a kit on the list and use 50% of it's parts.

Jason, can you post a link to where you read this? I couldn't find it. I'd be curious to know how recently the kit has to have been purchased. I've got a couple on the list that I bought in November. Thanks.

Interesting point about the Photo manipulation.

I suppose I could always enclose my negatives as proof of veracity.

I'm entering this contrest. The prize-pack is just too good to pass up!

In response to those who think they might be able to get by with existing models, that isn't going to work. Although personally I think anything purchased after say, December 15, or whenever the announcement was made, would have been much more reasonable.

Directly from the rules (emphasis added):

TO ENTER: Entrants must log on to www.gearztv.com, www.revell.com or pick up an entry form at your local Revell retailer. Buy one (1) new Revell or Monogram brand Hot Rod model within the Contest Period (January 15, 2011 – May 15, 2011). The list of eligible Hot Rod model kits can be found at www.revell.com or at your local Revell retailer. The entrant must send the receipt to Contest Headquarters: Roadhouse Marketing, 376 Dogwood Road, Banner Elk, NC 28604 (along with the entry form and photos of your model if you do NOT have a computer). Please only send Photos, NOT models. This will enable you to either enter online, or to enter through the mail, the two acceptable methods of entry. Entries must be received on or before May 15, 2011. Entries may not be offensive or defamatory, which shall be determined in the sole discretion of Sponsors. All Entries must be complete when submitted. Incomplete entries will not be accepted. All Entries submitted become the sole property of Sponsors and will not be returned. Limit one entry per person.

Hmmm....hot rod theme. I may need to re-evaluate. But, I have some ideas; I may do something about that; usually not something I build, I might look for a way to do a "factory hot rod."

As to attracting younger builders...I hope it does. I think we should talk this up amongst the kids and young adults in our lives and see who might be interested. Perhaps we can all be pleasantly surprised by the response. It might work well and we could start re-invigorating the hobby from the ground up.

We also have several very good youth builders here. I hope they'll consider entering.

This will be a nation wide contest.

Anyone that needs to cheat to win shouldn't enter anyway.

CHEATING = Photos,Someone helping you build it. Buddies on the panel. You get the idea. :);)

It is a contest of building skills. :)

Yours against everyone else's.

There are guys oh here that machine there own parts.Thats an upper hand most of us don't have.[NOT-COMPLAINING]

Thats where your skills will be pushed to the limit,to level the playing field with those guys.

My focus is that I will choose my build and build it better than any thing I've built before.

If I win,it will be a BIG SHOCK :o:blink::)

The enjoyment of it will be that I'll improved my building skills.

Here's a question to the judge panel.

The rules state that "Box Stock" is using only parts in the kit.

Nothing is mentioned of chopping or channeling as it would still only have the "original" kit parts. Would that be correct? Thanks for your answers. :D

The other question for somebody on the judging panel is what is the Revell definiton for hot rod. I'm a little confused when they say the theme is hot rod but the have a 1949 Mercury and 1958 thunderbird on the list of kits. In my mind those are customs and not hot rods.

The question I have is if according to the site given to us by Drew ( who I believe is a judge for this) does this quote from the hub site mean this time frame on purchasing a kit should be concidered the word. :D

"However, for those of you on the Hub, here’s a little insider info: You can buy any of the qualifying kits NOW and start building either a box stock or modified category model because we’ve extended the contest period to allow retailers to take advantage of the Holiday season in selling kits. So hang on to your receipt, as you’ll need it to verify that you purchased a kit, but other than that, go ahead and start building"
