Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 The boiler body comes from a pipes & tank set from a gaming company, and then the rest is scratchbuilt stuff. The base is the cap to some container I had in the spares box. Some tubing, a couple of washers, a water bottle cap . . . that's it. In my old age (I guess I am getting more frugal) I don't like to run out and buy stuff if I can make it!).
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 I am still adding lots of little details, plus in the process I've been practicing the angles etc . . . I figure if I leave this one around for along time, I will really get to know all the right and perfect angles for all the shots . . . see what I mean? High angle uncropped: Same picture but cropped:
GTMust Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 I would add more comments about how incredible this all is but it's mostly been already said...... Wait a minute, I think I just did! Fantastic. I thought I went to sleep last night and woke up in Lilliput this morning.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 Thanks, Tony . . . I am working on this for a couple of more days and then I'm off traveling for the Holidays, so when I return I can start building new models and showcase them here!
crazyjim Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 I have some chain from my stained glass projects. It's twisted chain and not the straight loop stuff like in those pics. I might have a foot or 2 of the straight loop stuff if you want it. Have a safe trip.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 Thanks for the offer, Jim, but I have a whole bunch of the right scale chain it's just that I am in the process of blackening/weathering it . . . Stay tuned in for progress pics.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 Those pesky birds finally snuck in and started building nests everywhere! Making a little bit more progress with signage details too . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 I also worked on the floors and dirt . . . I think it's getting there . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 Here are a few more for a Hump Day Lunch Candy Hour . . . LOL!
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 Glad you like 'em! Sparrows have a way of getting in and making a home for themselves. Now, let's see if I find my little rat . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 LOL, Al, it's a Michelin man that comes with this Italeri truck parts kit I've had for years . . . I'll try to take a close up of it . . . In the meantime . . . Here's some signage up on Cranky's wall of flames! I just got them up, so I still have to dust them up a little bit, make them blend in a bit better . . . thanks to all of you who helped out with signage. These are the kinds of signs that have kept me out of one particular magazine because my propaganda really corrupts the thousands upon thousands of children building model cars all over the USA. Bless them all! Also, I have to be politically correct here and say that most of these images I'm using are not mine, so I honor the copyright holders . . . and I use them in my work soley as a way to pay homage to all the things Dr. Cranky is crazy about! I guess the birds must be nesting because they sure are making a mess out of my sign!
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 All right folks, this one is getting close to where I can already start using it. I'm still working on a whole bunch of details, but the work on the big things is over. A base like this is just endless fun . . . THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THE WONDERFUL SUPPORT AND HELP!!! Enjoy, maties! Cheers, Doctor Cranky
whale392 Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 (edited) That is truly a thing of beauty you have created Virgil. I love the whole atmosphere; all the signage and funky gunkness in all of its inglory! And I agree with you on the whole 'other site' issue...........too much political correctness. I made a comment about why they won't show a pic of a General Lee model with the rebel flag on the roof and was banned for a week. It was on TV, in movies, and is a part of media print.........if the 'kids' he is 'protecting' are so succeptible to 'hate' by exposure to that 'horrible icon', then it is their upbringing and mainstream media who have done it. The flag is heritage, not hate. Edited December 15, 2010 by whale392
old-hermit Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 LOL, Al, it's a Michelin man that comes with this Italeri truck parts kit I've had for years . . . I'll try to take a close up of it . . . OK, OK, ya got me on that one Virg. But this place is begging for some pigeon's in the rafters.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 I've gotta look around for some Preiser birds I got last year, which included a couple of pigeons. You betcha. Heck, when I find the right dog, I'll throw one in too! Somebody needs to do a warehouse scene like this in 1/8th scale to show off some of those choppers!
old-hermit Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 Somebody needs to do a warehouse scene like this in 1/8th scale to show off some of those choppers! If you're talking about me, I've built two 1/8 scale dio's and it ain't gonna happen again. Besides, anything I built would pale in comparison to this. You sir are the master.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 LOL! I can't imagine working in that scale. I draw the line at 1/20th. Anything bigger than that and you might as well stick with the real thing!
Aaronw Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Ew, I think I need to make sure I'm up to date on my tetanus shot after reading this whole thread. Ah, here's a glimpse of Cranky's humble beginnings . . . back when the Lab-Rat-Ory was in a rural, undisclosed location! I love this, it really makes me want to build a small rural volunteer fire station.
Dr. Cranky Posted December 16, 2010 Author Posted December 16, 2010 LONG LIVE RUST, that's what Cranky says!
Tony T Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 (edited) Wowzers!! That looks fabulous Dr.C!! Just amazing!! The nests are great!! Gotta ask where you got (or how you made) the jack stands! I need some for my garage dio. Merry Christmas! Edited December 16, 2010 by Tony T
Dr. Cranky Posted December 16, 2010 Author Posted December 16, 2010 Thanks, Tony . . . here's what you need to make your own jack stands . . . http://public.fotki.com/vsuarez666/voodoo-customs-chop-shop/misc/jack-stand-how-to/
Jairus Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 (edited) Virgil, that looks very realistic! I keep wanting to stroll around and check out the stuff. Very coo! Need some lockers up against the wall though, and maybe a little compressor. If I can find it, I have saved a resin vintage Coke machine that I'll pop into the mail to you. Excellent build V, you da man! Edited December 16, 2010 by Jairus
