Foxer Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 (edited) With the great things TDR is doing and talk in the Moebius threads about making models from CAD files, the ability to "print" a model from a 3D file has entered my "wish list" again and I've been looking at all the 3D vehicle files I've acquired over the years. While it's cool to texture up a 3D file to whatever paint and finish I desire and render a picture I've always had bid dreams of being able to send it to the "printer" to carve me out a 1/25 rendition! I really expect this will be a reality someday in the future. As TDR has shown, this is already entering commercial world! My entrance into the 3D world was collecting 3D mesh files of any automobile I could find. After 18 years of this, I've amassed quite a garage full. Most don't have textures applied in the 3D file so the basic renders on the following contact sheets are only crude renders to show what the 3D file consists of. I spent many hours applying textures. I just thought some might like browsing these images imagining you could just load up one of these files and print yourself of the car you could never find a model of! charlie8575 Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Very neat, Mike. You wouldn't happen to have any sample of rapid prototyping floating around? This is an interesting topic, and I think we as modelers would benefit to learn a little more about it so we can see how newer models are created. Charlie Larkin
Nick Winter Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 '94 Grand am huh? would have to get one of those, learned to drive in a '95 Grand AM SE. Watched be crushed in October, was a pretty decent car parents had it since new, actually got it exactly a month before I appeared. Wait what were we talking about again

Foxer Posted December 14, 2010 Author Posted December 14, 2010 This is one of the companies making 3D Printers referred to me by TDR
Chuck Most Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Yes! I'll finally have that '89 Mercury Tracer kit I've always wanted!

Foxer Posted December 14, 2010 Author Posted December 14, 2010 Yes! I'll finally have that '89 Mercury Tracer kit I've always wanted! Only have a '94, so you'll just have to backdate it. Some things will never change!
sjordan2 Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Boy, these huge files have sure made it hard to load this thread, and I have optical fiber high-speed broadband. I sure feel sorry for people on dial-up, and I don't understand why all of them have to be shown.

I did at first put just one image and the link to my photobucket page with the others but it seemed to load pretty good for me. If you're having trouble with that connection I'm putting it back to the way it was. Edited December 15, 2010 by Foxer
Foxer Posted December 15, 2010 Author Posted December 15, 2010 (edited) This is Pretty cool stuff. 75 Cordoba?? hehe ..I had to go back to the archives for this one. It's an old mesh ... kind of like a '50 Revell kit! Edited December 15, 2010 by Foxer
Scalper Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 Cool. you have a Cordoba. the one you have is a 1980 but still pretty sweet. You can make a really cool driving simulator with all the meshes you have. cool stuff.
