No, nobody has died, and I haven't lost a pet or anything like that. (Actually I don't have a pet because my wife says I'm enough animal for the household but that's another story... :D )

I'm getting the blue Ferrari ready for shipping. I've never shipped a built model before, so I have no idea what to expect. I'm going for the overkill. Better safe than sorry. I drilled little holes in the base (like in those black based display cases) and used wires loops from the suspension to the base. Just like suggested by those other cases.

The car was wrapped in flannel cloth. So if it rubs, it will actually polish it some more  Then added some foam wrapped in flannel cloth to lightly press fit against the case. Then the case was taped to the base just in case.

Yes, it is an overkill, but I'm still worried, especially about the mirrors. I still need to get a suitable box and tons of additional padding.

Tsk tsk, there is a slight chance it may make it to NJ.....

Thanks

Izzy, just a suggestion..........you may want to totally encircle the car with toilet paper several times to really cushion it in the plastic case. Just in case the ties work loose somehow.

Perhaps several wraps around the sides..........and then several wraps from front to back. I got this suggestion from Paul Hettick who sells fantastic looking models on eBay (robbbbbb57).

Although by the time you read this, you may have sent it on its way.........

I would have a real difficult time waving goodbye to something that pretty!

Same with me, personally I would avoid anything hard around the model while in the box. Lots of tissue paper inside a box the size of a shoe box, lots of newspaper around the shoe box and into another bigger box, you want that thing to float man......

I work in shipping/receiving daily from little packages to pallets worth. Pack it TIGHT so that it cannot move anywhere. Also, be sure to label, relabel, highlight, and make the package SCREAM fragile. Use packing peanuts, newspaper, or bubble wrap in several layers.

You need more wrapping material! I know it's tied to the base, but you want the entire case to be full...When I took my models to Toledo last year, an 11 hour one way boucy road trip, I had them wrapped in paper towel, inside and upside down AMT display case. There was no damage whatsoever! (Until I was setting them up and broke part off with my clutzy hand)

I have shipped hundreds of built models. I can't recommend tying it down to the base. Any impact could pull your axles/wheels off of the rest of the car. If it is loose the whole car will move slightly and the cushioning will do it's job. Wrap it around and around with T.P. or paper towels. Double boxing is essential. Don't use styro peanuts when you double box. They are too rigid and unforgiving. The best thing is crushed newspaper. Good luck.

Hello,

Following everybody's suggestions, off it went today in the mail. It is wrapped in toilet paper, then in flannel cloth, then in foam padding, all pressed fitted inside a display case, with tape around, with crushed newspaper all around in a much bigger box.

Ohh, and I wrote the word Fragile more than once on all sides

It went priority mail so hopefully it will arrive damage free and on time to be in NNL East in NJ....

Thanks,

Cool - I hope to be able to see your work up close at NNL East! I'm sure it will get there in great shape, you did a great job of packing it.

"Fra-zhee-lay. Must be an Italian guy." :D

You might have a problem there, I believe Fragile means something else in postal-ese. To most of us it means please be careful, but to the post office I think it means run it under the 12 ton press, whack it around the back lot with hockey sticks then play elephant soccer with it.

I guess that thing in school where you have to make a container for an egg then drop it from a height actually has a purpose after all. :D

Aaron, you might be on to something there.

Postal anecdote from yesterday: I'm mailing a package and they ask their usual "Anything fragile, liquid, perishable or potentially hazardous in here?" I say "Yes, fragile." She then asks if it's packed carefully. ???

Now why would I need to do that?! Nah, I just threw it in there without any packing and hoped you fine folks at the USPS would get it there unscathed.

Just an update:

WOHOO!

It arrived safe and sound. Wipers came slightly loose but no big deal. The new owner is REALLY happy.

He'll bring it to NNL east....
