I'm going to be doing another General Lee build and want to include the quintessential Dixie horns. I was looking at some air horns from model trains and was wondering what scale would work best for a 1/25 build. I was thinking HO scale train parts would give the correct look in the engine bay of a Revell 69 Charger. I'm just not familiar with model trains. Any input would be greatly appreciated (and would save me time in trying to scratch build them :) ).

Thanks,

Chris

Here's a scale conversion from Grandt Line, which sells lots of model railroad stuff (www.grandtline.com)

Seems to me that train horns in 1/24 scale would be way too big for a 1/24 car, though.

I think "O" scale would be it. The normal size Lionel train. HO is too small but people use HO scale rivets to make button tufted interiors.

G Scale is the closest. O scale is usually 1/48. G Scale is 1/22.5. A little large, but that is the closest. Watch though, as G Scale pieces can range in scale and I have found some that are closer to 1/28

I understand what you are asking - HO scale Horns would look like small trumpets for an air-powered dixie horn such as found on the general lee. O and G scale Horns from a Loco would possibly be too large to depict what you are trying to do.'

I agree with Mike, the HO gauge horns would be the best for the Dixie horn. The trumpets like the pics he posted are much smaller than a real train horn, and the only thing I'd suggest going bigger for is train horns for tractor trailer rigs. Those are REAL train horns and the only horns I'd use a G scale horn for. That reminds me, I need to find a set for my in progress rig! B)

By the way, Chris, I'll look through my train stuff, I might have a set loose that I could at least post a pic of with them under a Charger hood so you can see if they look right.

Chris: I model HO scale trains in addition to model cars. If you send me your address, I'll send you a nice assortment of plastic air horns that will work. They are in my parts box. I usually replace plastic with brass horns on my locomotives. My email is: aarondupont@zoominternet.net. I'm in Medina Ohio. So they should arrive in a few days. And you don't have to sort through items at a trainshop. Aaron Dupont
