mrmike Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I haven't done a truck in a little while and I thought that it was time to build this one. I got this when the kit first came out as evident by the one-piece box design and the thick looking plastic. And, there will be a few changes made. A set of Pegasus 19" Chrome T's and disc brakes, a resin K&N air filter from Scale Dreams, a hood scoop from the AMT '87 Mustang kit, stripe decals from three '06 Mustang GT kits, and a hard cover for the pick up bed. My paint will be Tamiya TS-8 Italian Red with a gray interior. More to come.....
Thor Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Looks like a good plan you got there. Going to look great
Scale-Master Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I second Dave on that. Make the ground effects fit now, or leave 'em off. It's like they are just plastic suggestions.
Chris guthro Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 With you buildn er mike, should be one to keep an eye out for!
Modlbldr Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Looking great. It's good to know about the fitment issue. I picked up one that had been partially started and brush painted at a thrift store a few years ago. That may be why it was there. I'd like to do a model of my uncle's 1:1 black truck. Keep it up and let the hints fly. I'm listening. Later-
mrmike Posted March 23, 2011 Author Posted March 23, 2011 Thanks for the support and suggestions, guys! This was a tough part of this kit...adding the ground effects skirts! I added the front clip and the hood scoop. This was the worst part of all...the tailgate! The opening was pinched at the bottom and flared out at the top. I had to place the tailgate into position and glue it from the inside of the fenders and from inside the box and clamp it with a rubber band. I'll be cleaning this one up! This kit definitely could have been better engineered in regards to the body, side skirts, and tailgate. I wonder what other surprises are in store for me. More to come.....
RodneyBad Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 (edited) Adhering to Mr.Zinns advice and you can't go wrong Sorry, Mr.DoubleD. Truck is looking good. Of Course I like the early 90s version Love the hood scoop, I could use a 1/2 Dozen or so of those Really Dig the wheels and decals for it. Side Story, I had friend that had one of those 5.0 hood scoops on his 1:1 Pro-Street Duster. It even looked good on a Mopar. Edited March 23, 2011 by Zukiholic
mrmike Posted March 23, 2011 Author Posted March 23, 2011 Thanks Rodney! I did take Mr. Zinns advice to heart and after an one hours time, I had the side skirts on and hopefully, properly aligned. The truck needed a hood scoop and even though it willl not be functional, it give the truck a racier look. I have been working on a hard tonneau cover and it is coming along rather well. I measured the bed for the correct measurements and cut it out of a piece of sheet styrene. I should have pictures of it later.
mrmike Posted March 23, 2011 Author Posted March 23, 2011 Here's the hard tonneau that I made from sheet styrene. I used a medium sanding stick to bevel the edges and make the rounded corners with. Paint was flowing today! More to come.....
RodneyBad Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Dang, That is a Bright Red Looks Great in Color.. Bed cover looks like it fits like a Glove..
mrmike Posted March 24, 2011 Author Posted March 24, 2011 The bed cover sits on top of the bed rails. I was going to make the cover fit flush with the top of the bed rails, but I took the easy way and made it a little bigger than the opening.
mrmike Posted March 28, 2011 Author Posted March 28, 2011 I have finished the engine save for a few touchups and a decal on the oil fill tube. As I was building this engine, I noticed the extra valve covers and intake manifold on the parts sprue. Did Revell originally intend this to be a 2 In 1 kit or a different version altogether? I have started on the chassis by adding cross members, spring hangers, and the exhaust system. More to come.....
Tumbler75 Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Lookin' good Mr. Mike! I have this kit in my stash and I noticed the same thing. I'm wondering if some of the parts were meant originally for the Supercharged Mustang or possibly a stock truck. Not sure. Love the colour and you nailed it with the ground effects. Keep up the great work!

Mike I can answer that after looking at my Revell '98 F150 and comparing some parts it had to a Revell '99 Lightning parts kit I had, I noticed the Lightning started life as the F150. those extra parts started life in the '98 F150's engine bay. Nick BTW very nice work so far.
mrmike Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 Mike I can answer that after looking at my Revell '98 F150 and comparing some parts it had to a Revell '99 Lightning parts kit I had, I noticed the Lightning started life as the F150. those extra parts started life in the '98 F150's engine bay. Nick BTW very nice work so far. Thanks Nick! I suspected that there might have been another version out there, I just couldn't remember if there was. OK guys, I have more progress! The chassis is nearly done save for the engine, drive shaft, radiator, wheels and tires. The bottom of the chassis. The exhaust tips will be foiled. A mock up with the engine. I don't like the fit against the engine and transmission mounts. A little massaging is in order here. More to come.....
Randy D Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Really nice detail painting on the build!! And a red truck is just cooool Look foward to more Mike, Randy
mrmike Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 Thank you Jeremy and Randy! I finally got the chassis up on four wheels. The suspension is fiddily to put together. I did a mock up with the body and bed. Lookin' good! I started on the interior by flocking the floor. More to come.....
Clay Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Mike, this truck is looking great. I want to get another one and do the mods that you are doing to it.
gautreau Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Coming together nicely Mike.I think I might have to pick up 2-3 of these.Seeing your build has gave me some ideas.
mrmike Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 Personally, I wouldn't be in too much of a rush to get another one of these Lightning kits. IMHO, this is a poorly engineered kit requiring much patience building. I am getting near my limit with this one! The chassis is now complete with suspension, exhaust, radiator, engine, wheels and tires. The interior is in-process. The dash and the instrument panel do not have positive mating surfaces. This is going to take a little bit of work to correct. More to come.....
mrmike Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 Well, I finally broke down and performed one of my least favorite choirs...wetsanding. I don't like wetsanding since I make quite the mess on the bench and end up with more water up my sleeves than in the pan. My last coat of paint had so many flaws, runs, and trash that I just had to wetsand the finish. I was hoping to have the Lightning finshed for tomorrows Classic Plastic Model Club meeting, but that is not going to happen. More to come.....
