About 10 years ago (give or take) I primed and painted a 63 Galaxie with Testors Boyds enamel (Sunburst Yellow) and then packed it away.

Today I bought a jar of HOK Acrylic Lacquer Kandy Lime Gold for $1.00 and I was just thinking about finishing the 63 by spraying a few coats of the HOK, and maybe a couple other colors over the top of the Testors.

In your opinion, would this be fine or a no-no?

I really don't want to strip the body, either before the HOK, or after due to some cross pollinating problems. Do you think there will be any problems with the different types of paint?

Funny thing is, the body still has the 10 year old masking tape over the roof. It's been quite a while.

Tom ,

Big no no ! Never put laquer over enamel . 9 times out of 10 , it will eat the enamel . Now , you can put enamel over laquer , just not the other way around . I'd mix up some Pearl X in some Testors clear and go over your existing color with that.

I must have caught the one out of ten. I recently tried this very thing hoping the paint would craze and crack, but it didn't. I sprayed some Testors enamel, let it dry just a few minutes, then sprayed MM lacquer over it. I just knew it would craze like all get out,but nooo! Maybe it was because the enamel was still wet or maybe it was because the lacquer was an acrylic??

Sounds about right. The crazing is due to different shrink rates most times. That is why you get the ridges. I must also say that it depends on the enamel. I got some automotive 2 part enamel and after it dried I put DuPont clear lacquer over it no problem. There are no hard and fast rules in painting(except safety). As Capt. Jack Sparrow says, they are more like guidelines. Because paints vary so much from manufacturer to manufacturer the only way you will know for sure is test it on something you don't care about.

I wouldn't shoot the HOK over the Testors enamel....it's probably not fully cured yet. :)

Seriously, strip it and go with all lacquers.

I agree with those who warn against it, like Mr. Yost. I say don't do it. Why take the chance?

I've learned the hard way over the years to stay within a paint line, or paint system, and this will spare you lots of heartaches.

Of course, having said that, I find myself experimenting with the use of Auto Air Colors and House of Kolors.

:D;)

What's the fun of learning in this hobby if you don't go through some crashes and heartaches?

Seriously, you take a big chance.

Model Master Lacquers are just a modified enamel (assuming you bought the new MM Lacquers). That's why they didn't react with the enamel. Don't try that with the HOK though..... ;)

Well guys-

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably just go ahead and finish this body with all Testors paint and save my HOK for another build. Or....I could put the kit back in the box for another 10 years and hope that it's fully cured by then.
