I was working at a house next to a rail crossing and a railroad company truck came up from the road and turned onto the tracks. It lowered it's rail wheels and drove down the line. Obviously I have seen rail trucks before but never have seen one get on the tracks. It made me wonder if anyone has ever made a set of rail wheels for model trucks.

I don't know if anyone has ever made them specifically for model trucks, but you should be able to find something about the right size in the model railroad section of your LHS. Maybe O Gauge wheels would work?

At that size, HO would probably work better for scale appearances. Most modern rolling stock is between 28" and 33", so even the O-scale stuff (1/48th scale) would still be too large for the rail-rider drop wheels on the service trucks.

Note: this is just my opinion, and the info provided is subject to verification for validity.

I think Bradley might be right, at least from the picture Robert posted. I have some loose HO scale wheels and some dually wheels similar to the ones in the pic, if you would like I could sit them side by side and take a picture for you to compare them and see what you think.

I bought some stuff for a cargo load in a truck from these guys last year, I also got some small train wheels I plan to use on a model T speeder. It is a little different since the wheels on the T speeder swap the truck wheels with train wheels instead of being drop down guide wheels, like modern trucks. They offer several sizes and styles of wheels, so you might find something useful. Lots of other goodies too.

Thanks for adding the info, Bob. Even though I am not going to model one right now, I will squirrel the info away for future use!
