MrObsessive Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 (edited) It will be a cashless society in the future, we will not even have options on using cash even if we wanted to.... Maybe Cruz BUT--------What happens when the system crashes and you CAN'T buy with your credit/debit card? It's not a matter of if but when it will happen! I always try to keep cash on me just in case. Not a lot, but just enough in case of an emergency such as that. Edited May 6, 2011 by MrObsessive
Guest Johnny Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 (edited) The officer was overstepping his authority in that case. Only a judge can make that call. Not at all! He had no reason to arrest as she was making a reasonable attempt to settle the matter given there were no signs stating "no checks" and the Officer made that point. The manager could not keep her there. He either had to accept the check (with other ID information in case it was bad), call the bank the check was written on to see if funds are available (I have done that myself), or let her go without paying on the promise to return with cash in which case he could have asked for her keys, or her DL to hold until she returned. I forgot one option (which I have done before) he could remove the gas she pumped from her car. But would be responsible for any damage he may cause doing it! Edited May 6, 2011 by Johnny
Darin Bastedo Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 The officer was overstepping his authority in that case. Only a judge can make that call. Not true. If there was a statute on the books that a business must have a sign present to refuse checks, then he has full authority to enforce that law. Judges can only decide one of three things, whether you are guilty, innocent, or the law is unclear/uncontitutional.
Harry P. Posted May 6, 2011 Author Posted May 6, 2011 It's not all cashless...yet. My 6pm flight to Newark, NJ became a 2am flight to JFK/NY last Monday. When I landed, I still had a meeting in NJ at 8am (who needs sleep????), so I drove to the original hotel in NJ which required a trip over the Verrazano bridge. Good luck to you if you don't have the $13 in cash to pay the toll. They don't take checks, and they don't take, to quote the commericial, American Express. For a toll that big, I would bet a LOT of visitors don't have the cash in their pockets. I certainly had no idea that it cost $13...especially since I never should have needed to take it. So if you don't have cash, what do they do? Make you turn around and go back???
Guest Johnny Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Does a Troll come out from under the bridge and eat you if you don't have 13 dollars in cash???

Harry P. Posted May 6, 2011 Author Posted May 6, 2011 I'd hate to need to cross that bridge every day to get to work!!!
Guest Johnny Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I'd hate to need to cross that bridge every day to get to work!!! and yet there are those that do it!
Harry P. Posted May 6, 2011 Author Posted May 6, 2011 While I'm sure there's some kind of accomodation... Riker's Island...
charlie8575 Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 They can't do that. Cash is "legal tender," good for all debts, public and private... says so right on the bills. No place of business can refuse to accept cash... can they?? It is the long-standing policy of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure to accept only checks or money orders. Cash, they found, had too much of a habit of..."disappearing." Many administrative bodies in the government will refuse to take actual currency, but will require personal checks, bank drafts or money orders. The only places governmentally that will take cash are the colleges and the Registry of Motor Vehicles. I believe all cities and towns are also required to only accept negotiable instruments, again, for security reasons. Charlie Larkin
charlie8575 Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 While I'm sure there's some kind of accomodation, I didn't want to pay cash (it's MUCH easier to do my expense report with anything charged to American Express since it's an automated system) so I pled my story to the toll keeper. "My flight was diverted, and I wasn't planning on taking the bridge...I don't know if I have cash but I have a credit card" "Well, without cash you won't be taking this bridge, pal." was the oh-so-friendly response. I made a point of paying all but $5 it in change. I just dump all the silver I get in my computer bag when I fly, so there's about $30 in change in it sometimes. It's not like anyone was waiting behind me at 2am so I was glad to give the toll man something to do for a few minutes in return for the hasssle. *HIGH 5*
Darren B Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 With the way the economy is anymore who in there right mind would not make a sale, any sale of any amount, because they do not want cash? Man that just sounds insane. I had a small business for a while and I would take cash, credit, check, trade, first born, anything to make the bills and payroll. Where is this country and world going to? You cant get better than cash! well unless its counterfeit, but you can get a pen that checks that to make sure its real money anyway. Just plane nuts....
Darren B Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 It will be a cashless society in the future, we will not even have options on using cash even if we wanted to.... I have heard that a lot on the overnight talk shows, pretty wierd indeed.

My kid just sold his 2006 Trailblazer SS to a guy from down on the Indiana/Kentucky border. Imagine what went though my son's mind as well as the cashier at the bank when the guy hands him a leather pouch the was carrying over his shoulder and when opened contained 19,000 dollars in cash!!!

He would not have the authority to tell the gas station manager he "had to let her go without paying". That was what I meant. Telling him to accept the check for payment, since it wasn't posted, that I'll agree with.
pepperdrumstix Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 I have known for years that the banks have wanted to get rid of cash money for all transactions so they can charge a fee for all transactions involving their bank customers. But that won't happen ,yet. They constantly lobby the government to do away with cash. The SS checks will no longer be mailed after May 2013 to citizens receiving them. You will have to have a bank account to transfer the checks into. At the young -old age of 63 I have never had a credit card, and just recently a debit card I use on special occasions. My "bank" has been my front pocket and I always know how much I have. So far no one has figured out a way, except taxes, to charge me for spending my own money in cash purchases. I was going to the store mentioned last month with a coupon to buy a kit and use my debit card and I'm glad now I didn't. This is the golden age for thieves and pick-pockets, they never have to go outside anymore and mingle with the great unwashed to get the money, just stay inside and use their computer. And this plastic card use to buy things is supposed to be better for us? Not us, the banks maybe. The thieves for sure that know how to hack into systems and steal our money. The store owners because they now have a permanent record of all their sales, and the IRS for now having a record of where and when we spend our money. Good for everybody but us. Patrick M
evilone Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Today's paper has a page one story of how scammers were able to get PIN and other credit/debit card info and have been making cash withdrawals from people's bank accounts. Apparently all of the activity has been on the accounts of people who recently shopped at Michael's stores. So to any of you that may have recently shopped at Michael's and used the card swiper at checkout, watch your bank statements for suspicious activity. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-il-michaels-informat,0,5059154.story this is why i only use the cash money idea. Also if i dont have the cash to cover it at that point then i dont need it trust me it save alot of headachs later down the road if you use this plan.
sjordan2 Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Not every vendor has the technology or the desire to pay the fees that are required by card companies. Candy bars, a Coke, a taco at a food truck, etc. Cash will be with us for a while.
Guest Johnny Posted May 6, 2011 Posted May 6, 2011 Saw the Girl Scouts selling cookies outside WalMart. They had a hand held thing and people were swiping their cards to pay for the cookies. The lady said it was credit only on the cards (no debit) and about 2/3 of the people were using the cards instead of cash or checks! So the small vender evidently will be able to take plastic too!

Dave? Dave Ramsey? Is that you??? We haven't used credit since 1998! We pay as we go! But with the wife's check being direct deposit and my check coming the same way now we had to change our account to one that has a debit card. So we use that mostly because they have made checks cost too blame much to buy!
