Wetsanding

Just wondering if someone could give me a quick tutorial or rundown on how to wetsand..

I set the faucet to a slow stream and keep dipping the sandpaper and part into the stream while sanding.

If I'm sanding the body after painting, I put a little squirt of Dawn dishwashing liquid into a container and add water. Then dip the sandpaper into the container. The Dawn seems to lubricate the sandpaper.

My approach is similar to Jim's, but I will fill the sink with warm water and add a little dishwashing liquid to that. I don't sand under water, but I'll dip it enough to keep everything wet.

And make sure your sandpaper is made for "wet or dry" sanding. If not, it will likely fall apart quickly.

Also soak the paper for about 10 minutes before you begin sanding.

Never heard about soaking the paper, Mike. Why is that? Make it softer?

same here ,, except I don't bother with the soap ... soap residue will wreak havoc if you plan to spray any further paint/clear.

that said I may try it anyway

Another key point is don't press too hard. Let the paper do the cutting. It's not necessary to overpower the paint, you are in effect beginning the polishing.

I have always used a bit of dish soap and have never had an issue afterwards.

I use a little different technique. I have a spray bottle of distilled water(very cheap at the grocery store in the bottled water aisle). I use micromesh pads and a light spray of the water. I put a towel in my lap and have at it. Frequent spritz of water clears the residue. I can do this at my bench and don't have any contamination problems.

I do that,and wash & prepare my salads (ala Kramer) Saves on water!
