One thing I have noticed is that when a reply is made to a topic, and the only thing in the reply is a smiley face, icon, or one word, please do me a favor, and let's curb doing that.

There's a couple of reasons, but I'll try to make this simple.

When you reply with a :) or something like that, It does place a load on the servers, although it may seem like it doesn't take up that much space or room, but every reply to a topic loads the server. It doesn't matter how big the reply is, it registers as a reply, and thus it makes everything else work because of it.

Sorry to get picky on this, but it will help those who look at New Content, without having to go through and see a happy face instead of a discussion on the topic.

Thanks, and hope everyone understands

A picture is worth a thousand words, but I will abide, Sir. I will add the word "awesome" to every post I make! :)

PS: I still miss the ninja emoticon, Gregg! Free the ninja! Otherwise, I may have to have some T-shirts, posters and signs made up!

Mahalo, BK!

I actually agree with you on that Gregg, it is sort of irritating going to a watched thread and just seeing this:

:)

If I may make a suggestion, it would also be nice to see less quoting of posts with tons of pics just to see "Nice Job" at the end of the quote. I can see if you are asking about a certain pic, quote JUST that pic, but for some updates with 5 or 6 pics and then someone quoting that update and just saying "nice job" or "good work".

Sometimes those who don't understand the basic English language (and I mean the people who live in the states!) and you need a translator just to understand what they say get pretty annoying to, but that's a small issue!

i have to agree with the sentiment regarding the copying of an entire post, pics and all.... please, just please, stop that. add your comment and reference it if needed, but don't quote the entire post.

A big thumbs up on that!

Wel Gregg,

With all do respect.

If we are worried about loading up the server with replies, then not posting at all would help too. LOL

:lol:  That's funny there. I don't care who you are!

How about deleting old stuff? Say, anything older than two years?

I don't think that would be good, there are some good threads that get dug up now and then.

Just before the server change, I suggested that deleting anything older than 5 years might be good to free up storage space. I still think that's a good idea, but one of our newer members keeps searching out older builds that are good to see again, and that draw admiring comments from members who haven't seen these builds before. If I were in charge of all this, I'd still delete anything older than 5 years.

My opinion about that would change if this site had a halfway useful search function so people could look up wisdom from earlier threads, but it's still useless. What good does it do to keep all that information around if you can't find it? If you want to search pointers about something, go to scaleautomag.com.

This site is like your attic. There's only so much space... you can't save everything. I think deleting ancient stuff would be a good idea... and we wouldn't need to upgrade servers so often.

:o I thought Gregg said the whole point of the recent upgrade was to avoid having to delete stuff, ancient or not. ????

The forum outgrew the old server, so ... voila ... new server. Not throw out old stuff and continue on with old server.

It's like going from a small house to a bigger house. Pretty soon the bigger house fills up with stuff, too. Then you need an even bigger house... and so on. By deleting ancient stuff we could delay the next server upgrade.

Deleting anything older than two years won't allow me to complete my On the Bench write-up. I'll just have to take it straight to the Under Glass section.

Harry, you posted eleswhere that the "que" on Danno's escapades is voluminous. I suggest archiving them off-line and the servers will be safe from stress for a long time.

There are lots of old threads that had pictures that went along with them and the pictures no longer exist. Usually because the poster removed them from the hosting site and in some cases the hosting site no longer exists! Those could go.

Look at the trade and wanted forums! Probably 95% could be deleted!

But then some one would have to go through and do the deleting post by post!

Just deleting all of his emoticons would free up about a gajillion cubic feet of space...

But nowhere near as many gajillions (whatever that is) cubic miles of space wasted by multiple photos of General Lees ad naseum, especially the mandatory 16 views of the same blurry part. :D Seems to me.

I'm dilligently trying to conserve space by using a little ole emoticon to replace a thousand words ~ that would be misunderstood, misinterpreted, or misquoted anyway. ;)

And, on the topic of 'seems to me' . . . if the dinky little emoticons are such a problem, :o why do they exist, anyway? :)

Get rid of them entirely. Then YOU have no problems at all in the whole wide attic! ;)

:D:o

Uh, Danno... you do realize that I was kidding about the emoticons?

Right?

;)

Soytenly! And you do realize I was kidding about your kidding about the emoticons, right? ^_^

(I still miss the ninja. It could obviously communicate quite well without words! <_< )

Good points here, especially on trade section.

I will go through that.

I don't want to delete any old posts, did that once, by mistake, and hated myself for doing that.

I want to archieve the goods for the main site, and have that as the main place to go.

Skip, what do you mean the search is junk?

I thought it was/is doing a good job, no?

But I didn't know if you knew that I knew that you knew that I knew.

You know?

One of the other forums I visit, Starship Modeler, has several of the more active areas limited to about 45 days. When a thread hasn't had any new posts, it expires and goes bye-bye. This is mainly in the off-topic forums, but it does affect some of the model-related forums. The really useful stuff, like the construction & painting topics, are permanent. That's one way to keep the forum relevant but not too cluttered.

I do agree with the idea of gong through and deleting all posts that have had the pics deleted, when I first joined I started at the back working towards the current stuff and the amount of posts with no pics anymore is quite astounding. Would be a tedious job for sure but would remove quite a bit of wasted space. I do know alot of them were Jeff Saubers as I was quite keen to look at them alas to no avail. I'll put my hand up to help if needed even if its just an email with thread title, op and page no, to whomever. On that point, what about all the double up or now irralavint / pointless posts in the general section, some of those go on for pages, fun at the time but kinda pointless to keep. Better those to go than actual build posts (with pics). Thats my $1.50.

so with 2 pages of discussion on this subject, excactly how many smileys could have been posted instead ?

in all seriousness, i agree, maybe not so much because of the space (after all, were not storing this on my attic) then for ease of "conversation"

i also agree with all everything else said about qouting pictures

maybe we can set up a system (i have seen this on other forums) where you need to have a minumum letter count for a reply to be posted in which case a smiley would be below minumum
