New twist on "On The Workbench" (Update 8/25)

I am a drawer, painter and most of all a wood carver. I havent built a model in 20+ years. Wow has the hobby changed, for the good I might ad. Instead of just posting as I get started I wanted to draw the car first. I used the drawings supplied with the model as a basis. I am using the Revell 49 Merc. I have always loved them and would dream of owning a 1:1. Anyways on to the kit.

And what I want it to look like. I have not finished the drawing yet and probablly wouldnt but my son wants it when I am done. I have started the kit but will post pics a bit later. this is my FIRST attempt at an on the bench project and I am not used to taking pics as I go so I will do my best. Here the drawing. Let me know what you guys think.

By the way Ill be calling this one "Ragged Ole Flag" Thats why it has the ripped and torn look to it. Drawing it was one thing but putting it on the model may be another.......we will see

It's always a great idea to visualize what a paint job is going to look like. For those of us who don't draw, you can use copies of the instructions and you can draw your graphics and ideas on there. Very cool.

Just a thought. If you go this route, maybe you could paint the white first and use some of those little stars teachers put on kids' homework to help mask the front star graphics.

Well I chickened out on making the stripes of the flag wavey. Just the painting and taping of it was tough enough as is. Other than that for my first attempt at a more complex paint scheme worked out pretty well. this is just a mock up as the body is just sitting on the chasis. I will also be adding pics of the motor, for now the Caddy motor that came in the kit will stay in it. Maybe later Ill add the Ford/Mercury motor. So here is where it stands, I still have to go back and mask and paint all the shading on the flag. But you can see about how it is going so far. Hope you like ad yes Ill listen to any advice: And yes I still have to go back and add the stars but there ARE going to be added.

Here is how the motor is turning out so far. Still have more detail I would like to work on though. As well as the frame, needs more detail work. Just wanted to update you guys and see what kind of feedback I get. Dont be too rough on me Im just getting back into it.

I like the work you've done to the chassis . . . the paint job is good too, although I miss the stars . . .

That paint looks cool. I like the theme, and it fits nicely for that Merc' body. Keep it coming. May I suggest: Those plug wires are bit too thick. Maybe thin material would look better on them, but I still like that chassis, and engine.

That really is an ambitious project!

With shading and stars, the paint job will look cool.

One suggestion tho, the plug wires need gravity - let them droop over the valve covers.

If you ever decide to go with the wavy and stars down the road ,... besides decals, I do custom cut masking.

W-409 & EH225M< I agree about the wires being a bit out of scale, it was the best thing i had close at hand.

Scalenut Have you done any tuitorials here? I love doing the painting and stuff but the masking I suck at it. Plus any tips on the best type of tape to use. Now I did try some Frisket? paper on this paint job. It was what I used for the ripped out areas. It held great, stayed on throughout the paintiing. I have soooo many painting themes but man when it comes to masking them is what stops me. I can draw them out no problem, but masking kicks my butt everytime.

Ok so this morning after work I couldnt sleep so I got back on it. Funny, pics shows ALL the flaws you dont see with the naked eye. I see some areas I need to touch up, but all in all for my first more complex paint scheme I dont think Im doing too bad.

I still have a fwe more stars to paint in and some touch up work. A little more shading but I think it is starting to look pretty cool. Should be good to wet sand by the time I get home in the morning and maybe I can add more of the details.

I just went to Walmart a while ago and found three 1:64 scale die cast cars in a series called a patriot series. There was a 49 Merc with a simpler version of this paint job, a blower, differerent taillights etc...Just wandering if it inspired this build. Might wanna pick one up just to go on the shelf with it. You're doing an exceptional job for a first attempt at a complicated paint job.

I have used masking tape,frisket,transfer tape,liquid mask ect... in the past all with good results.

Than I picked up a Roland Vinyl cutter a couple years back and ,nothing compares..I can import any design and cut it from Premium paint mask.

It's ...well...awesome !

If you have a design ,I can cut if for you no problem , just PM me what you have to scale

Sky.... That little guy is tough looking. Ill have to be sure to get me one. Now that I have seen it if I had to do mine over again I think I would make the stripes wider like they are on that little guy. Thanks for letting me know about it.

Looks like you've even done a nice job of incorportating the golden eagle color from a flag pole top. Nice work.
