2000-cvpi Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 I just bought a Jo-Han 1970 Oldsmobile 442 kit with a warped body. I would like to know if anyone can think of a way to save the body? Is it too far gone? The warping is on the roof, front passenger side down to the door. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Craig Irwin Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Looks hopeless to me, maybe someone makes a resin body so you can use the rest of the kit?
Chuck Most Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Yikes! What the... To answer your question, no. If it were just the roof area, I'd reccomend cutting and pasting the good parts from it onto an easier-to-find MPC/AMT '69 body, but that body is pretty much cashed.
High octane Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Wow Corey, that body looks pretty bad and would take a miracle to fix. Best bet is to find another body at a swap meet as somebody is always selling built up kits and maybe you could get lucky.
Guest Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Yeah, that one's definitely toast. Maybe you could convert the AMT '69 Olds body into a '70. A lot of people use the chassis from that kit for other conversions,so someone should have a body they could trade or donate to you. Post an add in the wanted section and see what comes up.
george 53 Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 That is not factory damage. That was done by putting it too close to a heat source. If the box was sealed, the WHOLE kit should be like that, trees an everything. A result of being left too close to a heat vent or light or something. No it is NOT repairable. you need another body. If it was opened, you got out and out RIPPED OFF! Unscrupulous people will do ANYTHING to steal your money! Sorry you got burnt.
2000-cvpi Posted September 13, 2011 Author Posted September 13, 2011 Thanks to everyone that replied, and for the opinions given. I guess that I will try and straighten the passenger's side at lest to make a beater. The strange part is that just one small part of the chrome sprue is warped, the steering wheel and the grill inserts are also warped. The rest of the kit looks good.

I bought it from another modeler who bought a collection. For the five dollar price, I can look for a decent body.
VW Dave Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Yeah, that one's definitely toast. Maybe you could convert the AMT '69 Olds body into a '70. I agree, that body is headed for the recycling bin. Unfortunately, the '69 and '70 bodies are too different to make that conversion work. Corey - If you don't mind turqouise styrene, I have a spare Jo-Han '70 4-4-2 body I could swap you.
VW Dave Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 The strange part is that just one small part of the chrome sprue is warped, the steering wheel and the grill inserts are also warped. The rest of the kit looks good. If you are making a stock 4-4-2 out of it, those grilles are not needed; they are for the custom bumper assembly - the stock grille inserts are molded as part of the front bumper assembly.
W-409 Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 WHAT!? Never seen a new body in that bad condition. That is too hard to fix, I think. Maybe resin body should be good choice, as mentioned.
george 53 Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 If you did find other parts that were also warped, it could mean it was left too near a heat source while still in the box. Yeah, for five bucks you gotta really nice 455 Olds motor an some other nice goodies!
2000-cvpi Posted September 25, 2011 Author Posted September 25, 2011 I spent some time boiling the body and I think it looks fairly good compared to what it looked like before.
John Pol Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Looks good now Corey i was going to PM you because I have a spare 69 AMT body that I wouldn`t be using. And was going to get your address and just sent to you. Keep up the good work. John Pol
2000-cvpi Posted September 25, 2011 Author Posted September 25, 2011 Actually, I traded with VW Dave (a great trader) for a new body.
mysterj1 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 I thought you must've made a deal w/ someone; if you were THAT good, I think I'd have to do a hardcore search to see what all kits you'd made, because only a brain surgeon would be able to resurrect that mess!
