scalenut Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 (edited) The "I can't steer my car" fad A "Homebrew" version Edited September 25, 2011 by scalenut
Jantrix Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 The "I can't steer my car" fad Yeah, I mentioned this in my first post in this thread. Was there ever a name for this ridiculousness?
scalenut Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 it grew from the hispanic style lowriders ,, and somehow transitioned into the middle american teen import cars (without the suspension tricks) there's one down the street from me.
Joe Handley Posted September 25, 2011 Posted September 25, 2011 Looks like the first two just had the wheels positioned at the wheel wells just to get he idea of how they'll look on the cars. The "Euro" look usually had lowrider wire wheels poking a few inches out of the well (much like that mullet mobile Camaro) but had much smaller tires and some clearence (unlike modern Donks). Now that beater looks like it was cursed with GM's 10 Bolt rear end
Chuck Most Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 The "I can't steer my car" fad Or as I like to call it, the "I love replacing my wheel bearings every other month" fad.
Jantrix Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 Or as I like to call it, the "I love replacing my wheel bearings every other month" fad. I'm not sure what the spindles had to look like to get them out that far, but seeing one on the side of the road sitting on three wheels was a pretty common occurance when I was living in VA and IL in the 90's.
Erik Smith Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 On my phone now, so no photos yet, but what about 1980s trend of trucks lifted ridiculously high on 44 inch tires? They were all over as daily drivers and so many times bald tires because it cost more than the trucks value to replace them. I also remember the monochromatic themes mentioned - check out early nineties SAE to see some fine modeled versions.
Dr. Cranky Posted September 26, 2011 Author Posted September 26, 2011 Some great wild rides in here . . . I love those beetles!
Junkman Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 (edited) Some great wild rides in here . . . I love those beetles! You mean those Volksrods? I remember another fad: Graphics. They have all but disappeared by now, but back in the Nineties, they were all the rage. Best in a sort of heartbeat graph. If your pinstriper didn't have the hickups, you were nobody. Chuck Most Posted September 26, 2011 Posted September 26, 2011 Hiccups or prone to sneeze attacks- I seem to remember 'splatter' graphics being pretty big at that time, too.
Ryan S. Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 I don't think these got mentioned: Spinner rims
Jantrix Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 KIT CARS! Whether they were cool or supremely cheesy, these VW powered creations could bring the exotic into any middle class garage. I had a neighbor as a kid that had a Manta kit car. I loved riding in that thing. What a head turner.
