Junkman Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 I think the good news about Lindberg reissuing the superb 1:16 Bullhorn T and Minicraft reissuing the ex-Gakken/Entex/Academy A-Models including the hot rod versions, got a bit trampled in the newly tooled 50s cars stampede. Oh wait, Revellogram announced the 1:16 Peterbilt, hopefully priced a good bit south of the debtors prison. The T and As deliver potential for some excellent kitbashing, nay? I wish round2 would dig deeper into their 1:16 molds too after they gave us the General and announced the Petty Charger, and will give us back the AMT birds and stangs and tri Chevies and the MPC vettes and Trans-Ams. Most of the latter included hop up parts which could again be used to rod the T and As (IIRC, the 55 T-bird contained a superb set of chromed Kelsey Hayes wires). Not sure whether you've heard of it yet, but the AG released three 1:16 scale kits for the 125 Years of the Automobile celebration - the splitty Beetle, the 1934 Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental and the old IMAI Model-T that must have ended up with them in a deal I don't even want to know about. Not sure how many big boys are out there, but there is a lot for me to buy over the next 14 or so months. I still hope we'll see another batch of the Revell 1:16 dragsters and funnycars soon. They seem to have sold well and prices are already stiffening.
Casey Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 I am a huge 1/16 scale fan, but I would be happy if AMT's '64.5 Mustang and '57 T-bird and MPC's '79 Trans Am and all of their late '70s-early '80s Corvettes never saw the light of day again. IMHO, they just aren't very nice kits. Now, the Rod Shop Vette kit seems to be a kit people DO want to see re-issued, and you already mentioned the THREE 1/16 kits Round2 is re-issuing, so that's impressive by itself. I'm sure we'll see another 1/16 Revell T/F dragster (maybe a R/E this time?) or another F/C in the next few years, and I think the progression is Vega (Jungle Jim), Charger (Hawaiian), Dart/Duster/Demon (RRrrevellution), then Grand Am, so I guess it's Vega time again. Maybe some new decals to do a Pisano & Matsubara version?
Junkman Posted October 23, 2011 Author Posted October 23, 2011 IIRC there were a few late Eighties Camaros and Trans Ams made by Revell, also a Jeep CJ in various guises and a K-Series Chevy Silverado pick up I once made into a crew cab dually. I wonder whether the molds are with the AG atm.?
The Modeling Hermit Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I wish AMT would bring out their 55 & 57 Chevies again. They had a good thing going, and then stopped. It would have been nice to see the 56s added too, and then do the same thing with the Ford and Mopar counterparts. What I'd really like to see is a version of the 57-59 Ford retractables appear.
Chuck Most Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I'd like to see the Revell 1:16 street rod series make a comeback, and I'm working on getting a few of the recent Minicraft Model A Ford reissues. So, yeah, I think I'd be up for a little 1:16 scale revolution.
Junkman Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 In my imagination: A Peterbilt with a scratchbuilt car transporter trailer carrying all six variants of AMT 55/57 Chevies... And yes, I would want those Revell 1:16 street rod series kits back, too. All two of them.
Casey Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 The VW Kafer from Revell AG was a well done kit wih lots of detail, and I suspect the Kharmann-Ghia shared some of he tooling? I still see the Beetle on eBay for $75 or so, so it's still easy to find. The Revell Firebird SE and Camaro Berlinetta were ok, but were from the time before Revell was re-born, so from what I've seen of them, they wouldn't knock anyone socks off. Not sure if they were re-tooled into the later IROC-Z Camaro and Trans AM GTA or not, but those has better bodies, nicer engines, and some nice Goodyear Gatorback tires, too. Revell can keep their snap-together 1/16 Porsche 928, Corvettes, and the IMSA-fendered Camaro Z/28 kit in the warehouse. Now, the '34 Ford 3-window Coupe and Phaeton were great for the late '80 when the "billet" look was all the rage, but the kits could use some updating, which I would welcome, even if it meant never being able to release the original versions. 14" and 15" Goodyear Eagle ST tires are long out of date, but paired with a nice set of steelies and '40 Ford caps, they wouldn't look half bad. Add in four Moon syle wheel covers and you have another good looking option using the '80s tires in the kits. I want to say the coupe was re-issued as part of the SSP program (same time as the Bulldog Mack log truck?) in the early '90s... The Model As have nice bodies and a nice hopped up Flatty, but the Halibrand style wheels and pie crust slicks are awful, which is why I'm hoping the Lindberg Bullhorn T takes care of the latter problem.
Chuck Most Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I actually plan to backdate the Revell street rods to a more late '50's early '60's style, when/if I locate a few.

Chuck Most Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 That's when the recent Minicraft Model As come in handy. Yep.
Aaronw Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 The scale is a bit large for me, but I have very nearly bought the Model A truck a few times. If I had a better set up for display it would make a nice center piece for ome of my other models. If any of the Model Ts can be built as a truck I'd be tempted there too.
Junkman Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 If any of the Model Ts can be built as a truck I'd be tempted there too. I started that ancient Lindberg T and I would say you could easily add a pickup bed. Out of the box Model T trucks have been made by Bandai long, long ago. I have a stakebed and a C-cab. There may have been others.
Greg Myers Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 "pie crust slicks are awful, which is why I'm hoping the Lindberg Bullhorn T takes care of the latter problem." they look to be be from the same mold.I have both kits.

NitroJunky Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I am also a 1/16th fan. I have only built 16th scale dragsters in the past and made a start on a funny car. It would be nice to see a re-release or even new 16th dragster & funny cars Would anyone know of online suppliers of 16th scale parts? As stated ive built dragsters before and i can find parts for them easily but i will be starting on a road car soon and need to source items such as racing carbs and bucket seats?
KevinMoparFord Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Talked to the Revell guy at their display at NNL in Toledo and he said there are no plans for the 1/16 funny cars, that there is no money to be made there. Not sure if he is the one to make the decisions or not, but he sounded pretty negative on that scale as far as funny cars go.

Them kit producers are convinced there is only money to be made by not producing kits. Someone should remind them occasionally what the purpose of a model kit producing enterprise is. The reason I couldn't throw my money at them last time the 1:16 dragsters and funnycars were out, was because they were extremely limited and immediately sold out. I'm not the only one who was left out when I look at the prices they already command. The thing repeatedly saving the model kit industry is the loyalty and devotedness of their clientele. It's certainly not the business acumen. I am also a 1/16th fan. I have only built 16th scale dragsters in the past and made a start on a funny car. The only resin parts in 1:16 I know are made by a company called Resin Motor Replicas. They do have some intersting stuff though. Among other bodies for Willyses, alternative bodies for the Minicraft Fords, engines, gearboxes, a 32 grille shell, etc. and a Dodge Daytona conversion kit for the General. You can see their range here: http://rmrresin.webs.com/nf116.htm Then there is a guy who sells a whole range of resin wheels, which look very nice indeed. And you can use some 1:18 scale wheels as well. I hope others know more. Edited October 24, 2011 by Junkman

A friend of mine bought the Hot Rod issue Pontiac Lemans flopper kit for $25 sealed, plus sales tax.

So the Lindberg Bullhorn T rear slicks have no inner sidewalls, just like the Minicraft slicks? Major bummer if so.
Chuck Most Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 That's the one gripe I have with my Minicraft Model A pickup. Since I plan on tossing the fenders over my shoulder during the course of the buildup, I really need to dig up some alternatives. Well, that and the nasty sink marks on the cylinder heads...grrrrrrrrrrr.
Casey Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 That's why I'm hoping round2 reissues the 55/57 Chevies and birds and stangs. It would give us a much larger wheel/tyre choice. The Cragar S/S and American 200-S wheels are the best parts from those two kits, but I never thought the 5-slot wheels from the T-birds were very nice. Even the Goodyear Eagle ST tires in the Revell '34 Ford kits are a bit conservative in size, but at least they're better than Polyglas and Rally GTs.

The 55 bird came with a very nice set of Kelsey Hayes wires. Those I would love to use on a Bullhorn made into a track roadster. Gosh, I need at least three Bullhorns what with the plans I have.
