Dr. Cranky Posted October 29, 2011 Author Posted October 29, 2011 Thanks, Russ, everything is drying nicely . . . paint is around the corner. Been trying to also clean up the bench, but I must confess I never do while a project is in progress . . . And of course, I have Elvis to keep me company:
Nitrozilla Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Ultra cool Dr. C. I love Warcraft and Warhammer stuff. BTW, Elvis, meet Lily. She looks his type Virgil. Maybe we could hook them up ??
Dr. Cranky Posted October 29, 2011 Author Posted October 29, 2011 How do you know they haven't already! LOL!
Nitrozilla Posted October 29, 2011 Posted October 29, 2011 Could explain why she changes every night into that hideous grotesque form. I'm talking about the human one. As a monster, she's great. As a lady she can be..........less than agreeable.
Wagoneer81 Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I think I have it figured out... Doc, yer not supposed to inhale when you smoke a cigar...What we're seeing is the results of a constant nicotine high... I look forward to seeing more!
Dr. Cranky Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 Thanks, Chris . . . I am actually holding my breath on this build because the painting suddenly went from dull to intense in the last few hours. Tomorrow when everything dries well, I think I can take a round of pictures . . . this build might just do me in!
Dr. Cranky Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 I think I am getting too old for these kinds of raw-nerves paint jobs . . . But hey, it's my fault for always coming up with impossible ideas . . . Here's where I'm at after a day and a half of painting, masking, painting . . . etc . . . now I don't know if I should clear coat or leave it suede but glittery. Egypt was all about the bling, right?
Dr. Cranky Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 I started out with the chassis and fenders and painted them Sparklescent (AUTO AIR COLOR) and then fogged in a little ORANGE CANDY . . . The body is HOK TANGELO fogged over cheesecloth to give it a bit of texture, then Rootbeer candy was sprayed along the edges . . . all the emblems and the tail are going to be HOK Cocoa Peal, including the grill skull (not painted yet). The stinger has a variety of HOK pear colors, but the skulls and other details will be dry brushed with silver or old later . . .
Foxer Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 yow! .. I can smell the masking on that from here! It looks awesome though..
gasser59 Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Me thinks you've been smokin' papyrus in that stogie!! Personally, I like the flat looks with a few shiny pieces thrown in. The colors currently look like they've been carved from stone and maybe a few joint lines would enhance the stone look? Just rambling...so do what the papyrus tells you.
Dr. Cranky Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 I wanted to capture a variety of colors here, but I am sticking with gold, yellows, and orange for now, although I will put in some turquoise accents . . . This is a great kit and I've noticed that it's a tight fit the space between the engine cover and the radiator casing and front grill, so I might display the build without the cover this way I can clear coat the whole build, otherwise I am afraid the paint is going to be way too delicate. Some of the texture is not coming through in the pictures, but the cheesecloth did a nice job . . . I think you can see it in the above picture better . . . I am also thinking of adding some mummy-wrap touches with tape in the front fenders and body sides . . . I think it's going to bring out the whole EGYPT thing a little bit better . . . I am making progress, slowly . . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 Thanks, Mike and Brad . . . yes, I still have to add a million and three details all over the place. This is just the fresh paint job out of the booth . . . I think I will keep it toned down (not shiny) in most of the build . . . but this is, I think, a build that's going to have lots of different contrasts . . . and probably lots of color . . . we'll see. Speaking of papyrus, I just bought a sheet of it because I want to build a display base for this one with a few other elements, just for a little extra fun. Now I have to cut tape in scale for the mummy wrapping! The fun just never ends, does it?
Dr. Cranky Posted October 31, 2011 Author Posted October 31, 2011 I am painting a few more elements of the body, and then I am going to let it rest and turn my attention to the work on the engine. Once I get the engine and chassis done, I think I will feel more relaxed about this one!
Evil Appetite Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Here we go, starting off with the 34 Ford and some modifications, including a radical chop! What's a Cranky build without going over the top, including lots of new bling from WARHAMMER "TOMB KINGS" delicious parts . . . This one crawled out of a pyramid ready to sting you in the . . . EYE? LOL! I don't drink, ask Harry, I am as sober as can be . . . then again, I am very high on STYRENE! Pass the Testors? hehe
Nitrozilla Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I'm of the mindset to put clear on the places that need it and dullcote on the places that don't. Hope that helps Dr. C. Other than that, it looks great so far.
scalenut Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 ditto with Batzilla that Auto air has to be be cleared , no way around it..The spincxter is looking great so far !
Dr. Cranky Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 Yes, you guys are right. I've learned my lesson the hard way with Auto Air. Very delicate paint otherwise, but cleared it's as good as the rest of them. I am getting all the chassis parts painted and ready. I should have a rolling chassis soon. Stay tuned in for more . . .
VooDooCC Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Wow! I must say this is one of, if not the, most impressive builds I've seen on here so far.
Alyn Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 shiny or matte, your cheese clothe technique really looks nice. May have to give that a try.
Dr. Cranky Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 Thanks, Alyn, yes, it gives it this strange but pleasant texture. My recommendation to get the cheese cloth to stay put (it's tough to get it just right!) is to spray it lightly with some water and then it will stick to the body and then you can spray it lightly with low PSI so that you don't blow it around. I like the results . . . Stay tuned in for more progress on the chassis . . .
David G. Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Doc, you've raised model building to an art form... a rather disturbing art form, but none the less! As always, excellent work. David G.
Dr. Cranky Posted November 1, 2011 Author Posted November 1, 2011 Thanks, David. And everyone . . . this one has been probably one of the toughest models I've painted so far, and I am FAR from being done. I still have to paint all the little details, apply washes to darken panel lines, etc . . . and to top it all off I am constantly getting ideas for other details I want to add, so needless to say the progress is slow . . . but stay tuned in for more pictures . . .
