polandmob Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 just like the title says what scale is it and does it have a v6 in it either kit?
Jordan White Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Both are 1/25 scale, Cougar uses 302 V8 while T-bird uses supercharged V6.
polandmob Posted November 14, 2011 Author Posted November 14, 2011 What are the chances of finding. A third kit as a donor?
SSNJim Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 The only other kit I know of with a roughly contemporary non-supercharged Ford V6 would be the 1/25 AMT Ranger. I think it's a 4.0 V6, which I don't think was ever offered in the T-Bird/Cougar.
Chuck Most Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 What are the chances of finding. A third kit as a donor? Donor for what?
Chuck Most Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 If you need the V6, the Cougar would be the best choice, but you'd need to rework the belt drive and intake to omit the supercharger.
whale392 Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Chuck, I think you meant the MN-12 Thunderbird SC for the V6, correct?
Guest Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Your best bet would probably be the AMT '96 Explorer. It has a 4.0 V-6 and automatic. Probably have to add a tail shaft to the transmission since it's a 4X4. If you need a V-6 with a 5 speed, get one of the AMT Rangers. The Revell Cougar actually has a 5.0. I just checked my kit in the stash. I thought it came with a V-6, but it in fact has the V-8. I don't think anyone could tell the difference (in 1/25 scale) between a 3.8 and a 4.0.
Chuck Most Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Chuck, I think you meant the MN-12 Thunderbird SC for the V6, correct? Yep- the T-Bird had the V6, not the Cougar. Duh! Is 29 too young to be having senior moments?
Jordan White Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 The problem I see is not so much the actual V6 used, but rather what the intake and top-of-engine looks like. Here's what the actual V6 looks like under the hood.
highway Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 The problem I see is not so much the actual V6 used, but rather what the intake and top-of-engine looks like. Yep, that's the problem I'm running into also, and all I wanted to do is change the Revell 90 SC into my non turbo 3.8L in my 90 T-Bird.
Chuck Most Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Making one from lengths of styrene rod would be workable, if a bit tedious.
Maindrian Pace Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 The '90 Cougar has the V6/T5, the '91 Cougar has the 5.0/AOD. The Thunderbird/Cougar have the correct 3.8 V6 for the Mustang the Ranger/Explorer has the older Cologne V6 - different engine. The 3.8 has a nice block, heads, and valve covers which can be used as is, the intake, coil packs, etc, will have to be fabbed. -MJS
whale392 Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Thanks for the clarification, Mike! All i have is the SC kit, so that is what I based my thoughts on. As to the intake fabbing, square and round stock look to be the order of the day there!
Guest Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Now that I see what a '99 Mustang V-6 looks like, the intake looks kinda similar to the intake that's on the AMT Taurus SHO. A little modding and it should be close enough. Like Chuck,I'm having a senior moment and can't remember what size engine it came with though. Was it a 3.0 or 3.8?
Harold Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Yep- the T-Bird had the V6, not the Cougar. Duh! Is 29 too young to be having senior moments? The '90 XR-7 has the same V6 as the 'Bird. Revell swapped it to a 302 for '91.
Guest Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 The '90 XR-7 has the same V6 as the 'Bird. Revell swapped it to a 302 for '91. AHA! I guess Chuck and I aren't losing our marbles after all!
highway Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 The '90 XR-7 has the same V6 as the 'Bird. Revell swapped it to a 302 for '91. Is it the supercharged V6 just like the T-Bird, or is it a non supercharged plain jane V6??
highway Posted November 17, 2011 Posted November 17, 2011 Supercharged, XR7. -MJS :( :( That wasn't what I wanted to hear Mike!!
