Sixx Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 I thought I'd ask you truck model builders...might be a silly question, but where can I get drawings and scale size of heavy equipment, you know, length of parts; the boom, bucket, etc...I'd like to scratch-build some equip. someday, heck, even something like a skid steer or mini-excavator. I did a google search-nothing usable, or didn't put in right key-words. Is there anyone there that could push me in the right direction? Thanks for any help in advance! Sixx
73gmc454 Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 KFS offered them at one time but I'm sure has since stopped casting them, they made a michigan loader and good sized excavader , I would like to have more of this type of equipment availible , heres a link to the loader I found , I'm sure with some looking you can find more info on them, http://sourkrautsmodeltrucks.com/?page_id=3&category=15&product_id=763
RyanSilva Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 I'd love to come across dimensions also! My plan is to cut one out on a cnc router..even if it is mostly square it will serve a excellent starting point
Tony Bryan Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 If you draw one up first then you can use the Cat PDF files, yes they give you basic dimensions, but they are useable if you use something like inventor by auto desk, (my Favourite) you can force the program to do most of the scaling for you, , alternatively, find a machine and take as many measurements and photo's as possible, but the key to it all is doing drawings first, in scale, and go from there The KFS loader and excavator had there final run early this year, so they will be no more, I really wish he done a scraper now that would have been a model to build
Herc Tech Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Lee Valley here in Canada has wooden toy plans and have a construction vehicles section which have a front loader, crane, dump truck, and excavator . I have the loader plans and have calculated the scale and now all I have to do is draw out to the scale I want and start building. Hope this helps you out. Darrell
george 53 Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Ron Andrews over at RMR resins has a VERY nice excavator in 25th scale. It LOOKS like it MIGHT be modeled after a Komatsu Excavator. But it is a VERY nice piece. It runs 90 or 95 bucks, I can't remember. I bought mine at least 4 years ago.
jeffs396 Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 Derrick, there are a few different Bobcat diecasts in 1/25 scale, like these in Rodney's trade thread from awhile back: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=44641 He may still have 'em!

The RMR excavator is a re cast of a kids toy that you buy from a toy shop, if you look very close you can see the injector pin marks from the plastic toy, as well as the decal marks yes they do build to a nice machine, and in fact Anthony Oteri's machine is a great example Here is what you can make (I believe he lives in Italy) http://www.rctruckan...hread.php?t=310 Edited December 12, 2011 by Tony Bryan
cappy625 Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 hello sixx. i haul heavy equipment for the company i work for. if i could help in any way let me know.tomorow i will have a cat zero radius 308 on my trailer.i could take some pictures and get some specs if you want. i do have a picture of a volvo 330 sitting on a beam trailer but it don't show to much of the track ho. the picture is more of the truck i drive. but we have every thing from a skidsteer to a milling machine.
Chuck Most Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 There are some diecast pieces in 1:25 available too, like this skid loader. Last time I checked there were two or three other Gehl skid loaders available in this scale. This one I took apart and weathered. Might need to do something about those rivets, though.
chuckyr Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 This would a good chance for you to post your desires for new construction equipment models to the model producers. Just by coincidences, Italeri has a request survey on their web site, http://www.italeri.com/news_scheda.asp?idNews=93
clayton Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 The RMR excavator was mastered from a New Ray toy. It was named "Challenger 325 L" and looked like this; New Ray still offers it in a different color but it's listed as 1/32 scale and it's sold with a Pete and lowboy. I think it's larger than 1/32, more like G scale This is what mine looks like on my lowboy with the Freightliner, at 1/24 scale Thanks for the good words Tony! Is that the resin kit sold by RMR up in NY,NJ????
Chuck Most Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 Yes it is Clayton, I think RMR is located in PA http://www.freewebs....n/nfgallery.htm Right you are. Ron is a good guy to do business with.
hct728(Bob) Posted December 2, 2011 Posted December 2, 2011 (edited) Check out http://www.jleslie48...rane/index.html for a cardboard model in 1/25th. I'm planning to do it in 0.040" styrene. Or http://www.jleslie48.com/nosport/index.html Bob Edited December 2, 2011 by hct728(Bob)
Sixx Posted December 2, 2011 Author Posted December 2, 2011 Wow! Thanks for the info everyone! I totally forgot about RMR's cat! That is a great starting point.
73gmc454 Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Here are some pics of the kfs excavator on my detachable
Kostas Parchas Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 (edited) With imagination and loads of styrene you can convert a toy excavator to a nice model. Kostas. Edited December 4, 2011 by Kostas Parchas
Old Albion Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Interesting subject. We don't see too many items of heavy plant on the forum. Having said that, there are as stated one or two kits available and some diecast items. First Gear have a very detailed range of Plant Equipment. But they are expensive. http://www.firstgearreplicas.com/product.cfm I know that Howard at KFS has discontinued the tracked excavator and the Michigan Loading Shovel. But it may be worth E-mailing him just to be sure. Who knows if enough people want them he may decide to produce a batch?? Dave
Tony Bryan Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 This is KFS's loader, this was a really nice kit, I do hope he decides to do another machine
Sticks Posted December 11, 2011 Posted December 11, 2011 Tony That should look good when completed. Will have to look out for updates. Just one question though, who and where?? Evan
