Talk to Doctor Cranky , he has it down to a science . There is also a book available he authored which is worth it's weight in gold when it comes to said subject !

Thanks for the kind words, gents . . . Brian, yes, I employ both of those techniques, and I go over them in detail in the book. There are a few videos on my YOUTUBE channel on how to go about it.

The best advice I can give you is to practice first on a scrap body, trying some of the standard products available out there like the RUSTALL system (Micro Mark) or the rusting solutions that are available at the craft stores. Also, you can get a lot of subtle weathering done with pastels, you know the artists kind.

The other thing you can do after you start is begin posting results and then we can guide you according to what you are doing and what we see.

You've been warned though: RUSTING IS ADDICTIVE!

Happy styrene journeys!

No. No. Don't go over to the dark side. SHINY :) :) :) RULES.

I've gone through Dr. Cranky's book and it appears to be very informative if you really want rusty, crusty builds.

Yeah, but Herr Dr. Krankenstein is a total artist when it comes to weathering techniques. I wouldn't even come close if I tried.

I think you might surprise yourself. Cranky's techniques aren't all that complicated; a modeler of average skill could easily do things the way Cranky describes. That's the beauty of his techniques... you don't have to be a world-class builder to be able to recreate his results. It's just a matter of knowing the procedure.

Harry is right. It's not rocket science. Gee, I wonder who says that too! Even Donn Yost, Mr. Enamel, recognizes the beauty in a well-worn engine, right Donn?

Jim, we'll bring you to the rusty side one of these fine days. You can run, but you can't hide!

I gotta say I was a lot like Jim about five years ago. The idea of making a model look bad - on purpose - was absurd to me and I had many forum arguments about the subject. However when I got the idea to build a post-apocalyptic model years ago, I realized it is just as artistic and frankly, requires just as much skill to do well as a shiny paint job. It's also a GREAT change of pace and kinda liberating really.
