I's trying to strip the chrome off the wheels and exhaust of a AMT Fast and Furious Eclipse kit I'm working on. I always use Bleach and it always strips the chrome within minutes off the any Revell or Lindberg kit. I left the parts soaking in Bleach for a couple hours and NOTHING!!! Is there a secret to AMT chrome???

Liquid Drano, that's what I use, but pour it and keep it in a glass bowl OUTSIDE! Protect your hands with latex gloves. Let the parts soak and then rinse them with water.

(This sort of info should be put into a sticky thread with pros and cons for each)\

I use heavy duty oven cleaner to strip chrome, it comes off within 5 minutes.

BTW, I tried using bleach on Revell parts (the Snap Peterbilt) and it seemed to take forever, plus it didn't get off the underlying clear coat used to help the chrome stick.

Ok....I'll try one of those. I agree that bleach doesn't get that undercoat off either.....has anyone ever tried to just prime and paint over the chrome? I've never tried it...just wondering how it would come out.

Painting over chrome almost never works for me, it just flakes and peels off. I second what Jordan says, oven cleaner, never fails.

I noticed this week my AMT chrome was extra stingy about coming off. The same stuff that takes the Revell chrome off hardly touched the AMT chrome. Sometimes I prime right over the chrome, but only if it's a small part that isn't going to take much handling or weathering. The biggest concern with priming over the chrome is the further loss of detail. I've never really had the paint fall or anything.

Now the undercoat? Anyone have a good method for that ######?

I always use Fantastik spray cleaner.Put some in a container and soak for an hour or so and the chrome should dissolve without harming the plastic at all.
