n8dogginz Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Ok this kit is pretty terrible, and was wondering if anyone ever took a shot at it and if you have post me some inspirational pics, cuz im bout to throw this thing on the shelf being 1 hour old, ive been cutting flash off the chassis the whole time, and this is my break to vent. It has absolutely no detail, the engine halves dont fit together correctly, and the body has massive ejector pins still attached with one of them bent so bad the body is caving in! I would post pics but i scoured my whole house to find my camera cable, and the boogeyman apparenlty made a successful snatch on that one. Any pics you can post are gunna make my day...Thanx!
Craig Irwin Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I started one many years ago, did the bodywork on the nose and fender extensions, and threw it back in the box when Revell anounced the new Pro Modeler kit. It's out in the garage somewhere. It can be made to look good with a lot of work and a better chassis, but there is a much better kit out there.
Guest Sickfish Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Save yourself the heartache.... Never mind the shelf, toss it in the bin :-) Worthless & useless kit. Revell's Daytona kit is what you want. Simple. Cheers, Cliffo.
n8dogginz Posted December 15, 2011 Author Posted December 15, 2011 Eh, the least i could do for it is make a Joe Dirt curbside....you know for that movie they destroyed a MINT Daytona and weathered it?!?! The least they could have done is pop the good parts off and found old ones, jeesh. Either way im still interested to see if anyones done this thing justice....
57peppershaker Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I built 1 about 15 years ago, do have a few glitch's in there. Built it as a 69 Charger 500 in the end. The kit I had, had the 500 grill in there too.
FASTBACK340 Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Toss the AMT pig.... The Revell version is so much better. Why handicap yourself with a bad kit?
george 53 Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 IF you ALREADY have the MPC kit, and you WANT to build a subadiquit kit, GO for it! BUT if you want to build a DETAILED model of a Daytona the Revell kit is the ONLY way to go. Joe Dirt wasn't WORTHY of the destruction of a REAL Daytona! Such a stupid waste of a beautifully RARE car. The movie just wasn't worth THAT!
demoinc392 Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 The Joe dirt car was mint, yes but it was a 69 charger 500 that they added reproduction Daytona parts to. While it is a cool movie car I'd rather have the car in its original form.
CorvairJim Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Destroying a Charger 500 isn't any better than ruining a Daytona, as far as rarity goes. I was just reading in the January issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines that there were somewhere between 350-550 Charger 500s built in 1969, depending on who you ask. The Daytona gets all the press due to it's over the top aero add-ons, but the 500 was the first aero car built specifically for NASCAR homologation. Even it's model designation stems from the fact that NASCAR mandated that ChryCo build at least 500 of them for them to be accepted by NASCAR as a production model and therefore legal to race.
Nick Winter Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 From what I understand it wasn't a 500 either it was a Regular Charger with a Vega rear window welded in............ Nick As for the MPC Daytona, been there, done that, threw that out.
Haubenschild Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 (edited) The MPC daytona is the worst kit i have ever seen , luckily i traded it away Edited December 15, 2011 by Haubenschild
Mr. Moparman Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 The MPC daytona is the worst kit i have ever seen , luckily i traded it away Yeah, to me, which I sorted out for parts and tossed the rest. the decals are kida nice though.

Evil Appetite Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 i'd use it to practice painting techiques you might want to work with in the future. thats what i did anyway
ChrisPflug Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Of course with some scratchbuilding skills the crudity of the MPC might actually lend itself to a Joe Dirt build...... Rest assured, the 1:1 Dirt Daytona didn't destroy a pristine high dollar rarity- it was built from a base 318 Charger that had already been customized with a big block swap and Plum Crazy paint The second- gen Charger was a sales hit with around a quarter million examples built- not even the DOH made a significant dent compared to natural attrition LOL

n8dogginz Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 LOL! I think im guna put this one on the back burner and bust out my buddies old glue bomb S-10 Extreme. Thanks for lending me some words and letting me know im not crazy for giving up after an hour.
fastram Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Just think back guys when this was the only Daytona kit out there. I agree it sucks, but it can be built into a stock car with the use of the Dukes Charger interior tub, and a few spoonfuls of body filler. Don't give up so easy, this is a hobby and just slap it together if your looking for a break from something. Who knows, it just might inspire you to build some other kit you would have turned your back on. Plastic is plastic, it's just a hobby to have fun with. Another idea would be to cut it up and make one of the Deals Wheels creations out of it? HMMMM?
BKcustoms Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I used a revell chassis under mine, and scrapped the original crappy one.
torinobradley Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 How about using it for a Joe Dirt Movie Car????
moparmagiclives Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Is it really that bad of a kit ??? Can I have it?
wraith Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 How about really CHALLENGING yourself, and put it together! Scrastch build a chassis or kit bash a glue bomb?! That's what I would do!

Thats what I did with the my left over revell body, I can post some pics if you want to go that direction with this.
Plasticfanatic Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I have an unfinished one also, but mine was made in the nascar 71 K&K Insurance race car with Fred Cady decals, I used only the body and parts for it, chassis, engine and other details came from other more detailed kit, the ones supply with the original kit are pure and simple, useless. I can post photos of my unfinished model if you like to see it, since is not a street car version.
