Junkman Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 (edited) It doesn't happen often that a non-automotive subject gets my fancy, but also on Revell AG's list for 2012 is a model of my favourite airplane of all times, and in 1:32 scale, no less. It's the Heinkel He 219. Here is the list of non-automotive new releases, should someone be interested: Kit no. Descr. Erik Smith Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I hope the new Fiat 500 is in the works. Thanks for the list, Larry. I too would like to see a 500c - the new Fiatwith the opening top. Fujimi does the 500 in a number of liveries but they are quite pricey. The one that puzzles me is the Mini. A new tool? Is ROG just going down a list of Tamiya kits and making new tools of kits already available (ie Citroen 2CV)? I will be interested to see how it differs as I am a fan of 60s mini cars.
larrygre Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 I'd like to see a new-spec Cinquecento (Fiat 500) tool as well. I liked the Fujimi kit, but it is not the current spec car which has been re-engineered for the US market and the changes have been migrated into global production. Possibly RoG, or possibly Tamiya or Hasegawa since the Japanese are NUTS about the car - but those kits will be pricey if they do make it to reality.
Junkman Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 The one that puzzles me is the Mini. A new tool? Is ROG just going down a list of Tamiya kits and making new tools of kits already available (ie Citroen 2CV)? I will be interested to see how it differs as I am a fan of 60s mini cars. Don't forget they also fished in Hasegawa's waters for the Samba Bus, which they themselves even distributed in their own packaging, before they decided to tool it up new all over again. I too am not impressed by this practice. None of these kits needed new iterations. What a waste of tooling effort that could well have been spent on different subjects.
Rob Hall Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 (edited) I'd like to see some modern Audis besides the R8 (S5, S7 would be nice), modern BMWs (hasn't been a new BMW kit in over a decade), and modern Porsches (only the Cayman and a 911 race car have been done recently in 1:24th) and some AMG Mercedes sedans... Surprised RoG doesn't had more current German cars in their line... Edited January 4, 2012 by Rob Hall
Matt Bacon Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I guess it's probably the same reason Airfix isn't rushing to tool up Ford Mondeos or Vauxhall Insignias... Beemers and Audis are just too common in their home market. I think it's only Japanese modellers who seem to get excited about building regular, everyday street cars (and mad-ugly tuned versions). And my friends over the pond seem to have a strange fascination with every ugly hunk of Detroit iron that might have been a daily driver in the 70s. Personally, I'd rather build models of cars that I could only dream of owning for real, but each to their own... that's the joy of this hobby! I'm a bit surprised there haven't been any recent M-cars from RoG, but I'm quite happy for them to continue with those darn Ferraris, R8 Spyders and SLS's (I'm sure the cabrio is on the way). As for the 2CV... it's as iconic in Europe as a Mini or a Trabant, and the Tamiya one costs half as much again and has been very hard to find until recently. RoG can't be held responsible for which "classic kits" Mr T decides to reissue. It's good to see the Giulia Sprint and Renault Alpine back again instead of paying eBay prices, but it's hard to predict what will come when. Anyway, the 599GTO and SA Aperta will be all I need from Revell this year (with a Fujimi Aventador...) bestest, M.
Edsel-Dan Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Did they tool that Samba out right All New? Or is it a re-tool of the Original kit from 59, last issued Stock in 67?? Why would they have tooled it ALL new, yet done it in the Late 50's Multi-piece body ? I have one and it is Definitely OLD School tooling!!
Tonioseven Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 1/24 Ferrari 599 GTO (7/2012, NEW TOOL) 1/24 Ferrari SA Aperta (9/2012, NEW TOOL) That'll do it for me

Yes, despite it is a flat-pack, it's completely new tooling.
larrygre Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 One thing we're not taking into consideration here is a very important part of any company's product planning: market segmentation. Traditionally, the Japanese model kit companies plan almost exclusively for their home market, with exports being secondary and sometimes barely an afterthought. The same can be said for European companies such as Airfix and Heller; Airfix rigidly seems to stick to 1/32 scale for their car kits, the latest types concentrating on European racing and rallying. Heller's recent car kits are all Euro rally types, both 1/24 and 1/43 scale - and outside of a few of us die-hard racing lovers, not a hell of a lot of either kits are going to be sold here in the USA for the same reason that not a hell of a lot of NASCAR kits will sell in Europe (or Asia for that matter). So, there you have the main reason that RoG is doing a 1960s Mini Cooper while Tamiya still has a perfectly good one in their line. The Deux Chevaux is a bit more quizzical, considering the Heller/Airfix kit is quite good - it was still listed in their 2011 catalogue but currently a tad hard to find. In any case, RoG's kit seems far more state of the art. As far as Mercedes Benz and BMW, I have been after RoG for years to do a 1970s vintage BMW 2002tii - the car that essentiually put BMW on the radar screen here in the USA. Licensing is the issue there, which is one reason you don't see a lot of new BMW kits - they just want too much for the license. M-B isnt quite as bad, but many people wondered why Revell USA announced their boxing of the SLS AMG and it never happened. The reason was very simple. Revell would have had to have purchased a SECOND license, this time from M-B USA, to export the kit and package it here. The parent company license didn't cover that kind of deal. Someday, either Heller (if they ever experience a renaissance) or RoG will make my longstanding dream of a 1/24 Facel-Vega HK500 come true...well, one can hope...still waiting for Italeri, Fujimi, Hasegawa, RoG, etc. to recognize that the Ferrari 250GT Berlinetta Lusso is just too beautiful NOT to kit....! Just my dos centavos, amigos.
larrygre Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 Did they tool that Samba out right All New? Or is it a re-tool of the Original kit from 59, last issued Stock in 67?? Why would they have tooled it ALL new, yet done it in the Late 50's Multi-piece body ? I have one and it is Definitely OLD School tooling!! The new VW Samba Bus is an all new tooling and has nothing whatsoever in common with the old 1959-era kit. That it has a multi-piece body is due to the desire to have optional position doors and internal detail, both of which would have been a tooling nightmare with a one piece body if it were indeed possible. The Hasegawa kit (and Revell's reboxing of it ) had a one piece body but no interior side panels or internal detail. One edition of the Hasegawa kit came with resin cast interior side panels, but that was quite expensive and VERY hard to find.

Amen to that, brother! That would be a must have for my "McQueen's Machines" collection... bestest, M.
Luc Janssens Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 (edited) a 1970s vintage BMW 2002tii & 1/24 Facel-Vega HK500 I like the way you think.. personally I also would like a Ford Capri MkI and a Opel Manta/Ascona 400, Maybe some day....after they box me in LOL Edited January 5, 2012 by Luc Janssens
larrygre Posted January 6, 2012 Author Posted January 6, 2012 I like the way you think.. personally I also would like a Ford Capri MkI and a Opel Manta/Ascona 400, Maybe some day....after they box me in LOL Luc, I'll agree totally on the Mark I Capri AND the Manta. Those were GREAT cars. Add to that a Triumph TR4/4A/250, MGA Twin Cam 1600, Daimler SP250, and a Renault Caravelle. Cars from an era when cars were sexy and not mere appliances.
Rob Hall Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Definitely would love to see a Lusso...or a Maserati Ghibli or Mexico. Or an Alfa Romeo Montreal. Late '60s Aston Martin DBS. '60s Rolls-Royce Corniche convertible...to name a few.
