Repstock Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Here's the progress so far. I started a new thread to get rid of the "Another new project" title. Next time I'll just name the thread after what's in it. Vacation ends today, so progress will slow, but I'll post as things move along.
mikemodeler Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Another outstanding build coming from you Tom! Did you resin cast that front end or is that scratch built? It looks like the real thing, can't wait to see this one done.
cowboysevens Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 That looks great tom , you have got some superb skills !!
Eshaver Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 That front end is a killa !!!!!!!!!!!! Ed Shaver
Repstock Posted January 4, 2012 Author Posted January 4, 2012 (edited) Another outstanding build coming from you Tom! Did you resin cast that front end or is that scratch built? It looks like the real thing, can't wait to see this one done. The whole thing is plastic bent around round items until the curve pleased me, the rest is glued pieces and LOTS of primer and sanding. It would be nice to have more advanced tools, but my space and budget keep me a file and sandpaper guy. If I don't like the way a part looks, I'll do it over until I do. I've wasted SO much plastic! Some of the compund curves can be made with a super glue/ baby powder mixture. It's hard to sand, but very strong. I have never used putty, only this mixture. Much harder to work with than putty, but using it means the bodywork actually adds to the strength of the model body. Edited January 4, 2012 by Repstock
george 53 Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 WOW!!!!! That thing is FANTASTIC already!!!! Yeesh, it's actually TOO cool! Hope to see it finished up!!!
High octane Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 That van is lookin' really good so far, excellent work!
txdieseldog Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Tom, I've never heard of the baby powder/super glue mixture. How do you mix it and then apply it without a big mess or an ugly blob?
Harry P. Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 That is some mighty impressive scratchbuilding! I'd love to do a magazine feature on this. Send me a PM if you're interested. I would need step-by-step photos... so before you get too far along, if you're up for it, let me know ASAP. I'll PM you too.
Haubenschild Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 This is kind of a dumb question , but what year/era would that truck be from? And btw that looks really really cool
Harry P. Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 This is kind of a dumb question , but what year/era would that truck be from? And btw that looks really really cool Isn't that what a current UPS truck looks like?
Chuck Most Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Isn't that what a current UPS truck looks like? They've switched to boxier trucks in recent years- they're even running the Freightliner Sprinters now. The UPS truck that dropped off my Batmobile today did not have the old-style front end. Just looked like a Workhorse van painted brown. Tom- I am gonna LOVE this. Do you have any idea how long I've wanted to see somebody do a UPS truck in scale?
Harry P. Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 They must have changed over recently. Or they're still in the process, because the UPS truck that comes by here looks just like the one in this post.
george 53 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Mine does too. I haven't seen any other type of truck. Does UPS use those old square Carry-all GM box trucks? I've never seen any but the kind that Tom's building here.
ranma Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 find a resin caster and make copies from the looks of it these guys would buy them.
bandit1 Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 i know someone casted one of these...WWWWAAAYYYYYYY...long time ago??? ...i just cant remember who, what, when, where!
cargostar Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 That style has been used for years. They have been on Ford chassis with 300 6 cyl engines, Freightliner chassis with Cummins, and others. They have also used IH chassis with 444E diesels, and the Workhorse chassis for the lighter trucks.
Chuck Most Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 The one that dropped off my package yesterday looked like this one-
Guest Johnny Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 They must have changed over recently. Or they're still in the process, because the UPS truck that comes by here looks just like the one in this post. They have about three different styles they are using around here now! I'll have to see if I can get hold of one of my son's friends who is a driver for UPS and see what they are up to!
Ben Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 Can't wait to see this one finished!!!!!!!! Hey, you could make a diorama! All you need is a 1/25 football player that is kicking a football. Replace the ball with a box and put a brown uniform on him!
