'08SEAL Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I need something to take paint off. I want to know what it is. Help?
martinfan5 Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 It only works really for enamels and arcylics, if you need to remove lacquer based paint , use 91% alcohol. All you need to do is use a container that has a lid and is big enough to hold the body in it, and soak it, you will need some type of brush to help the paint come off in most case's. Soaking time varys
'08SEAL Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 Thanks Dr. Cranky. It only works really for enamels and arcylics, if you need to remove lacquer based paint , use 91% alcohol. martinfan5 Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 (edited) Its the same thing, just make sure its 91% What type of paint are you trying to remove? Edited February 8, 2012 by martinfan5
Mike Kucaba Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 The Purple Pond Is either Purple Power, or Super Clean. Both are sold at auto parts stores Wal-mart and the like. In my 10 years or so of using both, PP or SC has stripped all manner of paints. There have been a few that left stains in BARE plastic, but most can't stand up to it. 91% alcohol(or 99%) can be had at most CVS and the like. It works very well on Tamiya lacquer. You can also use it to wipe of mold release on plastic and resin bodies. Lately,if I encounter a real tough one I use Dawn Power Dissolver,an oven cleaner.
martinfan5 Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 You can also get 91%Isopropyl alcohol at wally world
'08SEAL Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 Its the same thing, just make sure its 91% What type of paint are you trying to remove? All of it. Laquer, enamel, and acrylic.
62rebel Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 i want to chime in with a safety notice: wear gloves. WEAR GLOVES when working with Purple Power or oven cleaner. your skin will thank you.....
The Modeling Hermit Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 It also can refer to brake fluid, which is what I've used for the last 30+ years. I've had excellent results, and never any damage. What works best is what you personally have the best results with.
skymnky721 Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I need something to take paint off. I want to know what it is. Help? Ive used EZ-OFF oven cleaner for yrs,,{in the YELLOW can},,all you do is spray it on,,let set for 1/2 hr,,use an old toothbrush/warm water at the sink and scrub off,,if its really old paint,,or multipule coats of paint,,you may have to do 3-4 cycles of this process,,and it doesnt harm the plastic at all.

Soaking time varys Purple Power was extremely effective for me in removing chrome overnight, and other unknown paints. I would recommend that the OP go to the "How Do I" and "Tips, tricks, etc." for endless threads on this subject. Edited February 9, 2012 by sjordan2
martinfan5 Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Skip, your right it does work for chrome, but I switched to bleech for removing chrome
'08SEAL Posted February 9, 2012 Author Posted February 9, 2012 Does anyone have a picture of the container that purple power comes in?
Dr. Cranky Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Here you go, Lane: http://www.clean-rite.com/
Mike Kucaba Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Every chemical that everyone mentions will strip paint. Pp and SC has more uses for me however. I can soak the entire new kit (except chrome) trees and all before I start the build. I soak my resin parts to clean off any foreign matter be it mold release or whatever. It will strip acrylics. I can use it to clean around my house and car. I just view easy off as old school. In the sixties it was discovered that model airplane fuel would strip paint. I wouldn't be using it now just as I don't use a lot of older technology products in my everyday life.
martinfan5 Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I am going to guess you will be able to strip more bodys and parts with a one gallon jug PP/SC vs a can of easyoff. I like having the container of the purple stuff ready at all times.
jerseyjunker1 Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 i want to chime in with a safety notice: wear gloves. WEAR GLOVES when working with Purple Power or oven cleaner. your skin will thank you..... wish you told me that before.lol
paul alflen Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 IF YOU USE THE PURPLE POND STUFF USE GLOVES. IT WILL BURN AND DRY OUT YOUR SKIN! ALSO USE SAFETY GLASSES ! IF SCRUBBING WITH A TOOTHBRUSH ON THOSE DOOR PANEL LINES BE CAREFUL!. A LITTLE SPEC OF PURPLE POND IN THE EYES BURNS.(DONT ASK HOW I KNOW THAT!) AND LASTLY DO NOT USE AN ALUMINUM PAN TO PUT IT IN. IT WILL EAT THROUGH IT. GET A PLASTIC TUB WITH A LID. CHECK WALLYWORLD, GOODWILL THIFTSHOPS, ETC FOR A CHEAP ONE. KEEP THE TUB OF PURPLE POND OUT OF HUMAN AND PET CONSUMPTION AREAS. WELL THATS IT FOR NOW. I'M OFF MY SOAPBOX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
