I've got a really wild corvette project planned. I'm not yet ready to release the details of it, but I'm stuck on the paint scheme. It will be done as a kinda - sorta - coulda - woulda been a Factory concept. Looking for cool color combos and designs that would work on '68 - '82 corvette. so if you guys could post some of your favorite pictures of either models or 1:1 Corvettes with cool paint schemes I'd appreciate this.

After 20 years of owning a C3 and seeing countless numbers of others, this might sound like I'm raining on your parade but these cars rarely look good when someone tries to go "wild" with paint and body mods. More often than not, they end up looking like something out of the movie Corvette Summer. If you thought those cars were neat, you've probably helped make several drug dealers very, very rich.

If you want to create something from the C3 era that looks like a factory concept taken one step farther, why not do a Motion Performance or Yenko treatment on this:

I no longer have the magazines with the pics, but back then Chevrolet was experimenting with mid-engine designs, and one engineer said he thought they'd probably have to use a twin-turbo V6 to meet future CAFE standards.

Here's my 1980. I kept the interior and the body factory stock and spent my money on the engine and chassis.

Actually the car isn't exactly based on the C3 vette, but anything that can be done graphically to a C3 would work with this body style. I'd considered a modified 78 indy pace car theme, or something along that line. but the car will be wild, not nessesarily the paint. I guess i'm just looking for color schemes and such.

I will agree with that statement.....custom paint schemes just don't seem to flow with the lines of a C-3 Vette....or ANY Corvette, for that matter. That being said, I've always been intrigued by the special gold and black Corvettes of the Apollo 12 astronauts.....to me, there's just something really cool about those.

here is what I'm building, it's an open top version of the Revell Aerovette. I took about 3 scale inches out of the top and made it into a speedster.

sorry about the image quality but it's just a quick snapshot

This is so weird - I've been a member of CorvetteForum.com since '98 and I suscribed to Corvette Fever magazine for years, but I'd never even heard about those cars till today when I was trying to find a picture for Darin.

Apparently great minds think alike. Allow me to quote myself from Post #4 : If you want to create something from the C3 era that looks like a factory concept taken one step farther, why not do a Motion Performance or Yenko treatment on this:

http://t3.gstatic.co...rITydlO4fU4b6UM I'd be curious to know how different the Revell and Lindberg versions of this car are.

As far as paint and design motifs go, how 'bout using a modified version of the paint scheme from the Mako Shark? I could envision your car in a dark blue with silver as the accent color. Use the top of the brake

duct as a reference point and mask along that line.

To complete the homage, incorporate the Mako Shark's tapering, louvered rear window treatment

Very kool Darin. I like the roadster look. I have a 78 Silver Anniversery in the garage.

I think a fade painting scheme (like Tim Boyd has done in SA) would look very good on this car.

Gots to love that yellow Baldwin Vette! The astronaut cars while uber-cool just clash with themselves piant job-wise.

Dittoes; my suggestion as well.

Remember, Darin, that factory concept and design cars generally do not sport wild paint finishes as they don't want the finish and/or graphics to detract from the visual impact of the design ... nor do they want graphics to be distracting. The Mako Shark's finish, while being somewhat exotic was still somehow pretty conservative. Most factory concept cars with exotic finishes just utilize 'new' colors but don't go into a great deal of experimental graphics.

On the other hand, third-party or aftermarket conversion cars (such as Baldwin, Nickey, et al) seem to rely on garish graphics to attract attention or create the image of 'different' or 'unique.'

Just some thoughts.

I guess I'm not making myself very clear. I'm looking more for some color scheme suggestions rather than graphics. something that will make it pop. I don't want to do something common, like silver with a tan interior. I want something I wouldn't normally think of that looks good even though it's unconventional. for instance the Corvette ZR-1 spyder that they painted silver with bright yellow interior, or the prototype Callaway speedster that was done in the pearl green with electric blue interior. I'm truing to think outside the box but I'm stuck.

Then again..the car itself is cooler than the paint job

Classic example of More Money Than Brains. Yes, this was a movie car, but unfortunately there are like-minded people who buy a C3 and try to achieve "cool" by purchasing everything in the Eckler's catalog & slapping it on their car. If the goal was to make it garish, mission accomplished.

I love what you came up in terms of the speedster concept, but I don't get the "clashing colors" thing. Think back to when Porsche released the last 928: Lime green metallic paint with a lime & plum interior.

Idea: You mentioned using the '78 Pace Car colors. Combine that with a red leather interior a la the '96 Grand Sport.
