I know that the NNL East 2012 is coming up in a couple of months... and I will definitely be there...

I'm just wondering when and if we will ever see MCM pictures of the NNL East from 2011...??? Will they eventually show up in a future Contest coverage issue...???

Coverage of NNL East is included in the February/March Contest issue.

Harry, I'm really not trying to be "picky" here, and I'm certainly NOT trying to stir up any pots or cause any controversy, but... wouldn't it be better to see pics of a show as HUGE as the NNL EAST sooner than a year after it...?? I know... I know... Magazine formats & schedules are made up long in advance, etc., etc... I'm just sayin'...

I know that I will surely get my subscription issue for the Feb/March Contest Issue AFTER the 2012 NNL EAST show is over...!!!

I have no idea how MCM works, and so I shouldn't be saying anything, but maybe it takes that long to go thru all the photos and get the best ones to put in the magazine

Unlike Scale Auto, MCM does their contest coverage issue as part of their regular releases, as the February/March issue. There are pros and cons to it but no matter when it comes out someone could question why a particular contest isn't in the mag. The folks at SA bring their contest issue out in the Fall before the Atlanta NNL so their coverage is always a year behind, much like MCM will be with the NNL East.

There should be some folks who attend the NNL East and post pictures here to tide you over until the magazines get them in print. The nice thing is that most attendees seem to take hundreds of pictures, sometimes multiple angles of a build, and the mag can only print a fraction of that total.

We used to include coverage of one contest in every issue, all year long.

But the obvious problem with that is, which contest is "worthy" of being the one contest that gets covered in the magazine each month? Let's face it, there are a ton of contests held every month. If we include coverage of Contest "A," everyone from contest B, C, D and E will say "hey! Why wasn't our contest covered in that issue?"

So what we've done lately is not include any contest coverage in the "normal" monthly issues. That gives us more pages to use for how-tos and informational features every month. All the contest coverage we do is now all contained in the annual Contest Issue, and each contest issue covers contests held in the previous year.

Obviously, since the contest issue only comes out once per year, we have to hold all the contests that will be included in that issue until that issue is ready for publication... so contests held early in 2011, for example, will appear in the 2012 contest issue along with contests held much later in 2011.

That makes sense, I knew I was wrong

Harry, how long does it take to go through all the photos and decide what gets included?,

A lot of it is decided very simply by what contest coverage we get submitted to us! The only way we can include coverage of a given contest is either someone from MCM (or someone acting on our behalf) actually goes to the contest and shoots photos and writes captions, or we get contest coverage submitted to us.

Beyond that, we sometimes get contest photos submitted, but no text or captions. So that contest is out. We can't do contest coverage if there is no text to accompany the photos. Same deal if the photos we get are so bad that they can't be used. That's happened too. And there's no way to go back in time and reshoot the contest photos.

So the bottom line is, we take a look at what we have, we eliminate anything unusable (either bad photos or no text/captions), and what's left we divide among the pages available in the contest issue.

It's not a scientific process... a lot of gut instinct is involved. For example, if we have a ton of west coast contests and fewer midwest or east coast contests, we'll try to "even things out" and eliminate a few of the west coast contests so we can run more midwest and east coast contests. But some years we have just enough content to fill the pages and not much more, so we basically run with what we have.

There are no hard and fast rules in play. Every year we take a look at what we have and put together a contest issue based on the usable material we have on hand. Hey, if we had a corporate-sponsored budget we could send out correspondents to a bunch of contests all over the country, but we don't have that luxury. We rely on you guys out there to provide the raw material for each contest issue.

Actually, when a certain someone would make the 5,000+ mile trip to a show, coverage of that show would go in the next issue, and photos of the show would go online usually that night; either from the hotel, or at the airport, waiting for the long ride home.

As for the snide comments, that's not needed, necessary, or even appreciated.

Yes, I deleted them.

No, they don't need to be repeated.

Rich, sorry to say, won't be seeing you guys any time soon. :-(

Harry , thank you the explanation on picking the photos, so I am guessing it can get very time consuming if there are a lot of photos submitted .

Gregg I am guessing you are the certain someone you are talking about

Harry and Gregg, I thank you for your explanations. Gregg, I'm sorry to hear that we won't be seeing you at NNL EAST this year. I sincerely hope that somehow or other your back problems get to be less of an issue for you. By the way Gregg, the picture shown (X-RAY)... are those the pins or screws in your back...??? Please stay well my friend.

I kind of miss the contest coverage in each issue. I dont mind the annual contest issue, but would like to see it still contain new products and reviews.

To me it is not a big issue since many board members post extensive coverage of the show in their photo accounts sometimes before the end of the weekend. Also a rival board posts photos the following week. I do like holding a mag in hand best but my immediate gratification is met by the timely posts.

When I dropped my subscription to the other magazine and their contest issue, I started looking through the SHOW PICTURES often posted here to catch up on what was going on on the tables all over the country. I rather have access to lots of pictures (good or bad) then a few glamour shots. I know when I got to shows I take an average of 200-300 pictures, sometimes more. And I post them right away to share them with everyone.
