Heartattaq Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 My name is Derick i'm 35 years old. I was heavy into the hobby when I was a teenager, making mainly NASCAR models, and trying to detail them as much as possible, improvising with items from Radio Shack such as small wires for engine wiring and the like. I jave a disease called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and as such am on disability. For Chritmas I received a small compressor for Christmas, it was mean tfor keeping my tires full of air on the vehicles at ome and stuff, but I remember looking at it and saying man that would have been a killer airbrush compressor for when I made models. Anyways, with all the apre time I have had from being on disability, I wanna get away from sitting on the computer all day and doing something productive with my time, Scouring this forum and a couple others has really given me the bug and I want to jump back into things. Now I know alot has changed since I stopped modelling approx 18 years ago, I went out yesterday and looked around my small town, and their is literally NOTHING Hobby related where I could get a good start, not even Zellers had anything. So I have a few questions. First off I am from Canada. So are there any stores in particular you have no issues ordering online from? I make trips down to the toronto hamilton area every 3 or so months, anyone know of any great plastic shops in that area? What kind of paints do you all recommend for brushng and airbrushing? I remember using the small testors bottles for dry brushing but never did like the results. Just before I quit I got into some Tamiya bottles for dry brushing they seemed to work better, but I didnt get alot of time with them. Any recommended airbrushes I should look at? what are the major companies producing models today? Are any companies still producing a decent NASCAR model? All I seem to be able to find are are snaptite models that dont seem to look to great. I will post new questions as they pop into my head. I think the toughest part will be rounding the items up to just get going. I wish their was a nice shop in my area =(. Anyways thanks all for the incoming help, in the meantime I will keep scouring hte sites. And get my subscritions going to MCM and SAE =D. I feel excited like a little kid again =D
Heartattaq Posted February 29, 2012 Author Posted February 29, 2012 I forgot to mention because I am on disability the budget is very tight Price will come into play when I buy the airbrush, so if any of you have come across an amazing cheap airbrush I should look at . awesome!
sjordan2 Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Welcome. You can find a ton of information just snooping around the site. One suggestion: Do you have a Hobby Lobby in the area? They frequently have 40% off coupons for your total purchase available online. That can save you big bucks on things like an Iwata airbrush. I'm sure you'll get a lot more guidance below.

Unfortunately there are no hoobyshops or stores in my area whatsoever that sell anything plastic scale modelling related. I have gone so far as to travel to the closes tcity, Sudbury, ON. BUt was unable to find a good hobbyshop there that had what I need. Now I find it hard to believe that their isnt one, possibly it is just a mom and pop shop that is poorly advertised. On that note, do you know of any online stores that you Trust ordering from? Edited February 29, 2012 by Heartattaq

Dr. Cranky Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Welcome to the best model car forum in the world, Derick. Hope you will share some of your eye candy with us when you are ready.

peter31a Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Derick, if you're in Toronto Wheels & Wings is a fantastic hobby shop. They have everything model related you could ever want. They are on Danforth Road just west of Woodbine ave. If you find yourself further east Dailey's Hobbies is also a fantastic hobby shop. It's in Whitby on Thickson road.
imatt88 Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Derick, Yeah, what doc said... post pics if possible... Welcome aboard. Cheers, Ian

I am definately gonna have to save an extra day, and printo out some maps beforehand, or borrow someones GPS and find my way to these stores. I gre up in towns with no more than 2000 people most of my life, so driving around down in the hamilton/Toronto area makes me mental sometimes lol.
peter31a Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 By the by if you're just down as far as Orillia, Lahay's hobby shop is an all around hooby shop with a little bit of everything for everyone (yarn, trains, art supplies etc) but not a bad kit selection for a small city store. They are on Mississaga street in Orillia.
Heartattaq Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 And I will definately, be posting pics of my first one back into the hobby. I was actually thinking of turning it into a blog, and chronicalling my build, showing what I did wrong, what I did write, how I fixed mistakes and things like that. The biggest issue I think will be keeping the pet hair off wet paint. My wife ownsa miniature zoo. 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 iguanas, 1 bearded dragon, 1 red eared slider and a miriad of fish. so with all those animals my own 3 kids, and I have custody of my sisters 2 kids atm my Paint jobs will most definately be in peril LOL.

Thanks Peter, my sister-in-law lives in north bay so we sometimes take that route to come down to Toronto, so I may take a swing into Orillia and check it out. Maybe in April during my next round of appointmeents
crazyjim Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Welcome Derick. The Paasche H series single action airbrush would be an excellent choice and is reasonably priced at several online places (Chicago Airbrush, Coast Airbrush, TCPGlobal). I've been using HOK paints purchased from Coast Airbrush. Only been to Canada once. It was Windsor, Ontario to visit the Canadian Vietnam Veterans Memorial (the North Wall).
Rob McKee Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Welcome Derick, A really good online site to order from is Model Express. http://www.modelexpress.net/ They are a Canadian company located here in BC. Dennis runs the operation and is very prompt and helpful. Another option would be Michaels. I am not sure if you have one close to you but if you do search online for their 40% off coupon. Buying at their regular price is a little steep. Hope that helps. Welcome back to the hobby and enjoy this site. There are many extremely talented modellers here you will learn from. Rob
Heartattaq Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 Oh wow, Flashback, I actually remember ordering some detail master products from Modelexpress backwhenI was in the hobby. The model I was working on was the Jeff Gordon JUrassic Park NASCAR. I got the window nets and seat belt harnesses. Great to see they are still around, will have them bookmarked for sure. Thanks for the heads up Rob, had forgot about them completely
Danno Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Welcome aboard, Derick. And, Jethro says 'welcome,' too. - That's more of that there humor, Jim.

He'll put it aside for you. If not ask if he can order it for ya. He's a good guy, he'll do what he can for ya and Welcome! oh BTW...if you have a Princess Auto there...they should sell airbrushes..the price is usually $30-$40 bucks...what you really want though is a Paashe H series though. I havent touch my Badgers since I bought mine. Edited March 1, 2012 by Evil Appetite
