LAone Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 (edited) ive been slowly working on this and my 67 impala. i have plans to finish both for a show/contest in may. so far it's all been body work and getting the stance correct. heres what the body looked like before using these tools i trimmed down the inner fenders. trimmed this in black marker. to get this, now it sits like so. worked on the suspension this time around. OOB it stands like this, wow horrible cartoonish camber and height...thats no bueno(good) so i had to take action. after some chopping and sanding heres what i got. ahh, some better Shakotan stance. nice and low with nice clean camber. it is the actual stance that im going with. ill be gluing in the rear tonight. i started work on the chassis. im filling in the holes that are there for the "motorized" parts. as soon as i finish this. ill be shooting primer on all my parts from this and the impala build as well. Casey Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Having owned both an '83 and '85 GT-S, you'd need to do something wicked with the lower control arms to get camber that extreme. Me thinks Dave Z and Snidely are gonna like this one a lot. Is this the Tamiya Marshall's Car kit?
LAone Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 haha, casey. now adays all the parts are available to get camber like this. NRCA's(negative roll center adjusters), extending the arms and or adjustable arms with a heim joint as well. its actually by aoshima. like mike states, it the "gran-chan" kit. ill get a pic of the box later on. i always forget to do so, but on the other hand, i do have that tamiya LB grand prix kit as well. michael, they are ok. they still need work to get them not too look toyish. i would not build one OOB just cause the camber, wheel placemenet and height are not correct in my eyes. here are some adjustments i did tonight. it's as far as i got picture wise cause my batteries died, but i got the stance locked in. ill take a pic later once my batteries have charged up. this side is the corrected camber and height. and this side is with out correction. the spindle/shock on the left is how it comes OOB and the right one is the one i trimmed down to bring the wheels in more to lower and "flush" the wheels to the arche. along with that, you'll see the brakes that i'll be using. and yup, that big rotor fits these little wheels. hope you can see them.
LAone Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 thank you dave. i greatly appreciate the compliments. it sucks that my batteries died. the pic i wanted to take was with the exhaust pipe im debating on using...tonight i will.
LAone Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 ok, so what would a shakotan build be with out some crazy exhaust design??? i was thinking instead of straight pipes or victory pipes, why not a star pipe! the inspiration for this is the ever popular Soarer. i did not make the star shape. its from the aoshima boso posey set.
Drake69 Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 (edited) Bosozoku!!!! That is going to be sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where are you going to source a scale figure of a man in a panda suit weilding a samurai sword? Edited March 3, 2012 by Drake69
LAone Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 hahaha, allen...not to that extent...that dude looks funny, but i dont think ill be able to find a scale figure of that....lmao.
Casey Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 I think a swagon shaped tailpipe would look pretty cool, too.
hotrod59f100 Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 I cannot wait to see this progress . I'm a big fan of this stye. Whare do you find the stretched tires? I love to build a few of my ol jdms that way.
Draggon Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Effin A, go for it! Ive got a Boso Hilux, Shatokan Celica, and GranChan Skyline still to build. I love your inspiration!
LAone Posted March 5, 2012 Author Posted March 5, 2012 shane, when ever available, i get them from hlj.com or hobby search. sometimes they pop up on ebay too. they do sell quickly and dont often get restocked. thanks glenn, hope to see those builds posted sometime soon. i have too many kits in my stash to even think of what i should build next...
LAone Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 well between taking care of my new born and these WIPs i actually got something worth posting. since the last pic, i have shot it with primer to check out the flaws. found a few scratches that need putty. then i though about what kind of front spoiler i wanted. it was either mild chin spoiler or a something with a bit more um, well you'll see. thats about it for now. i should be able to get the lip done soon and have a fresh coat of primer on it. thanks for looking.
LAone Posted April 23, 2012 Author Posted April 23, 2012 thanks shane, jack and john. ok, so here is some paint progress. after some primer, i shot it with some tamiya bright white. then i masked off the body for pattern "phase 1". sorry about the size of these 2 pics, they were taken with my phone. its the first time i have done patterns on any kind of build so its not perfect, but its not finished either. in a couple days ill mask it off for "phase 2" other than that, i have several parts getting ready for primer and paint.
Zarana-X Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Which kit is this? This car is on my to-do list. Aoshima made a boso type one, but I havn't seen it in years. Fujimi made a few different ones, and there is the Tamiya kit. Araii made one, which I'm kinda suspicious of. I've never built one of their cars, but their mechs are troublesome and have alot of flash.
LAone Posted April 23, 2012 Author Posted April 23, 2012 this one is the aoshima grand champ series first run. i keep forgetting to take a pic of the box art..lols no matter which japanese brand you buy, they will be "motorized" chassis, even the tamiya one. fujimis high machanism has some better details, but still on a motorized chassis. the one that has some fairly good details and even has an engine is the MPC kit, but hard to find.
hotrod59f100 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 I have the Mpc kit . It's deffenitly good quality .
LAone Posted April 26, 2012 Author Posted April 26, 2012 4/24: well, i did this late last night/early this morning..lols after 1 1/2 hour of masking i said what the hell, ill slap the paint on there..lols it was 3am when i finished up, so i didnt take some pics of it. i asked my wife to take a couple of pics and this was the best one of three. so dont mind the clutter. i need to adjust her camera on her phone..lols. ill snap some pics later today. Teaser 4/25 ok, so after i put my son to sleep i well, knocked out as well...lols once again i asked the wife to snap some pics. not bad this time around. so here it is, Undressed. its far, far from perfect, but its my first time doing this type of paint job. im actually happy with the outcome. next up are some decals.
LAone Posted April 26, 2012 Author Posted April 26, 2012 thanks shane. i hope to get better at it as there are more of these to come.
hotrod59f100 Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 (edited) Cool I love the whole Shakotan Style. I have a one I'd love to convert to some day. I just have no luck finding the stretched wheels. Edited April 27, 2012 by hotrod59f100
