JunkPile Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 That first video is back in the day of "REAL" men. Second video is just way cool. Thanks
Draggon Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Good grief Greg, there's a lot of carnage there. My Dad told me a story of attending an AAA dirt track race. One of the guys went thru the guardrails. He was impaled by a two by four. My Dad said he found a saw and cut the two-by so the driver could be removed. No surprise he did not make it. The safety regulations today are such a positive thing in the motorsports world, but those guys "in the day" had balls that cannot be compared to anyone today.
Lunajammer Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Reel 1 says "we like to think everyone escaped with their lives." Yeah, right. Aside from the macabre public appeal of grievous bodily harm on some of those, I'm most impressed with how well it shows the speed of the classic racers. Those mad men MOVED in their clatter rods, make no mistake.
zenrat Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 "No seat belt - it's better to be thrown clear" seems to be true in some cases. Either balls of steel or no imagination - who knows. Maybe they didn't mature and remained in the teenage "indestructible" period for longer?

Maybe they didn't mature and remained in the teenage "indestructible" period for longer? "Thrown clear" seems to have been less common than "crushed under the rolling race car". I can only imagine the mortality rate back then.
Art Anderson Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 As late as the last half of the 1950's, pretty much a fatality every weekend in motorsports, someplace in the US or overseas. Art
