bbowser Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Just heard that Earl Scruggs passed. One of the founding fathers of bluegrass along with Lester Flatt and Bill Monroe, inventor of the Scruggs style of picking that all banjo players emulate today. He will be truly missed.

Somewhere a banjo weeps. R.I.P. Mr Scruggs.
Dwight55 Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Yes it was sad. Wish I had a touch of his talent
Kit Basher Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 RIP Earl, I'm listening to "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" in your honor. Yep Harry, that was Lester singin' and Earl a-pickin' in that BH intro. They also appeared on that show a few times. I saw Earl perform many times. A modest gentleman, but when it comes to a banjo, he will always be The Man!
Harry P. Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 RIP Earl, I'm listening to "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" in your honor. Yep Harry, that was Lester singin' and Earl a-pickin' in that BH intro. Jerry Scoggins was the one who did the singing, Flatt and Scruggs played the music.
Kit Basher Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Jerry Scoggins was the one who did the singing, Flatt and Scruggs played the music. Did not know that, Harry. Thanks for the info. As far as I know, Lester sang it on the Flatt and Scruggs albums, it never occurred to me that someone else might have sung it for the actual intro.

Yes, Flatt and Scruggs recorded and released it some time later as a "Flatt & Scruggs" recording, but the BH intro (which came first) was sung by Jerry Scoggins.

Art Anderson Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 I always liked the Bartles & Jaymes theme song by Flatt & Scruggs!
Guest Johnny Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Sad day for sure! I was fortunate enough to get to jam with Earl Scruggs and Ricky Scaggs at a Bluegrass festival several years ago! He was a great picker! Godspeed Mr Scruggs
