Critique or criticism it doesn't matter to me. It is totally out of line to call someones model awful or looks like a diecast toy (when they know it's not). Dude can't even spell (aweful???).

Rant over.

You guys are waaaaaaaaaaaaay overthinking this.

It's a public forum. The "public" (the members) have the right to comment on a model posted "Under Glass" (as long as they are within the forum rules, as in no personal attacks, no profanity, etc.)

If you post pictures of your work for the world to see, you are in fact putting the model up for comments, negative and positive. If only positive comments and pats on the back are allowed, what's the point? We're all here to learn from each other and hopefully become better modelers. Disallowing critiques makes the forum useless.

Simplest posting rule ever: If you can't take criticism of your work, DO NOT post it.

Just too general of a cover all statement there Harry. Life just ain't that simple no matter how much one wants it to be!

There are some that do not understand the meaning of "constructive" criticism. On both ends. Some can't give and some don't understand.

Some are just plain mean about it and I believe they know that they are! But that is another can of worms.

While a poster should expect to see some remarks positive or negative they should not have to expect to get shredded by someone that "believes" they are God's gift to model building!

I believe the word is "tact" and many here need to look that one up and learn to use it, wisely!

When I post a build and mine are far from being great as they get. I could care less what is said one way or the other or if nothing gets said at all! I just post what I feel is interesting and usually something that goes to a particular thread. Or just to show that, "yes, I really do build models some times"!

Yeah, Johnny.... it is that simple.

You have no control over what others will say. Some will offer constructive criticism. Some will give you a pat on the back. And yes, some will be rude or sarcastic or whatever. Some people are like that, and you can't change them. Like I said, if you can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen.

If anyone starts to get personal, those comments will be removed. Comments and critiques of the model will stay. And if a person just can't accept criticism, that's fine. Just don't post your work.

Sounds like someone needs to step back from moderating for a while as they are starting to sound like the rest of peanut gallery lately!

I believe a Moderators job is to be above these things rather than in the middle cheering them on, don't you?

Wait a minute,

It certainly IS that simple.

Read my earlier reply.

I don't know anyone here and I certainly don't know Harry,

But,

He is stating the exact truth and you Johnny are doing exactly what people here are complaining about.

I'm not cheering anyone on. I'm telling you the simple facts. Posting photos of your work on a public forum means that work is open to comments. And if a person can't take criticism, that person should not post their work. Period.

That whole "everyone gets a prize just for showing up" kind of PC thinking is nonsense.

To say that everyone here isn't allowed any kind of critical remark or critique just to shield a handful of overly-sensitive types doesn't make any sense. What makes sense is, if a person is that overly-sensitive type, maybe they should think about whether they want to post their work.

It's just simple common sense, Johnny.

Just an off-topic break here...is the clock on this forum set to Hawaii or Guam time? It's 1:44 PM Eastern here, and Harry (Central Daylight Time) just now added a new post at 8:42 AM.

I think you need to check your preferences...

Well shoot me in the head...I actually agree with Harry. :D

But I have to say that the whole candy-coated sugar on top environment is so prevalent here that some visits I just close the tab after a few threads. Sometimes because it's just all so sweet it makes me sick and sometimes because I know that I could easily offer a suggestion that would help the builder but it's easier to not post than get my wrists slapped for "dogging" someones effort.

It really is just simple common sense, but your message comes off as a bit hypocritical, Harry...the expressed intent of it goes completely against the reality.

I've only been back at the bench for a bit, and don't post up my work other than in the chat because honestly my camera blows. But that'll change soon and when it does I hope that people offer suggestions to improve my efforts, because if my threads turn into Ira or Teresi fan club type threads (no offense guys...yours were just the ones that were at the tip of my tongue :D) I think I'll hurl. If I post something it'll be as much to get another set of eyes on it to spot something I may have missed as it is to just say "lookie what I did."

Then again, I'll probably include "please critique" in my threads just to give the people like me a heads up that it's okay to be critical. Shame that it's even necessary because like you said, Harry, it should just be simple common sense.

Like they say... common sense isn't very common...

That section already exists- Under Glass. Romell's own blue italicized words in his post: "if you have any questions or comments please feel free to post them."

Not everyone deals with criticism as well nor as readily as they can accept praise, but when you post in an open forum, you have to be prepared for both. There's no need for another category, but it would be nice if people could learn and understand the difference between critiqing and criticizing a model versus personal criticism. I think that would be a far more valuable addition to the Model Cars Forum. :)

Amen. On all counts.

There you go, folks. Simple logic, simply put. Follow this guide and you won't go wrong.

That's why the man has been the longest-lived moderator on this forum. He has it together. And he keeps it together.

(Amazing that he's from Chicago.) :o

"Do unto others...," applies here. It's okay to offer advice and constructive criticism, but remember the goal is to enlighten, not break the spirit of the builder. It's all in how the comments and critiques are offered. Never hurts to identify an aspect of the build that showed promise, followed by your idea(s). Try to remember when you were learning a new technique and what it would have felt like if someone ridiculed rather than encouraged you during that process. Same holds true here.

Once again I'm lost. I have no idea about the post Kaleb mentioned originally. I thought if you posted a build here that's fair game for everything. I personally have started sending PMs for most less than favorable comments. Some people have even PM'd back and said thanks.

Everyone knows my builds aren't the greatest. So who cares? Building models is my hobby and I'm having fun!

So, here we are with the umpteenth discussion of this subject that, sadly, is generally being discussed by people who have been here quite a while. I won't repeat what others have said about "don't post if you can't handle the heat," but I'll say this:

Harry has made it as clear as possible, and I would suggest that he should change his avatar from the innocuous Barney Fife to this different Harry:

I also agree on the above comment...

"Go ahead, make my day" sure sounds better than "Gimme my bullet Andy!"

I think we can stick a fork in this one, it is well done!
