59 Impala Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 (edited) This is my 57 Corvette that I built way back in the early 60's. It was painted Gold and then masked off the coves and sprayed transparent blue over the gold and it turned out a green color. That surprised me cause I didn't know what to expect back then. I used spray cans then also. Well, I thought it looked great cause of how it turned out, but there was dust in the paint as usual. I had no clue back then on how to paint the models and keep them clean and dust free. Well, it took a bath in the purple pond and now it is flat white. I had to repair some of the parts for the front end and now the chassis, engine and engine compartment is done and waiting to get the body painted. I'm going to paint it Aquairius Shift like the Frankinstude that I did with Gold coves. Well, enough yapping and here are some pics. The way she looked before I stripped it. What she looks like now. More to come so stay tuned. Dan Edited June 3, 2012 by 59 Impala
Bartster Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Love these Vettes. l'm impressed that you've managed to keep it so long! I can't wait to see the paint. Keep up the good work!
Badluck 13 Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Cool project,I really...I mean REALLY like those wheels!!!
59 Impala Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 Thanks fer the kind words guys. Those wheels came in the kit along with the tires. I had to redo the king pins for the front wheels and I did this tonight. What I did to fix the broken ends didn't work out so I had to do something else so that I could position the wheels in different positions. I hope this works out. I'll have some pics up tomorrow to show what I did to fix the problem. Dan
Guest Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Nice work so far Dan! There's nothing better than restoring an old built kit! If you need a set of king pins, let me know. I have several from the AMT '57 Corvette.
59 Impala Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 Thanks guys, and Roger I'm hoping that I got the king pins fixed last night. I cut 4 pieces of tubing and glued them on the ends of the pins. Thanks for the offer. What I do need is the 2 bumperetts that have the exhaust ports in them. The Vertical ones. Somehow the original ones came up missing and I can't find them anywhere. I'm also going to spray another coat of flat white on it today. I still haven't decided on the color for the interior yet. Dan
Guest Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 What I do need is the 2 bumperetts that have the exhaust ports in them. The Vertical ones. I've got 'em Dan. Do you need any other chrome pieces? I've got all of the chrome from the AMT '57. Let me know what you need by PM and send me your address.
59 Impala Posted June 3, 2012 Author Posted June 3, 2012 Finally an update. I've painted the coves, top and dashboard Gold Pearl mixed in Future. Now, when they are dry I'll mask them off and paint the body Aquarius Shift over the white. I'm experimenting with the paint cause I have no idea of how this is going to turn out. Well, here are the pics of what she looks like now. Thanks fer lookin and I hope ya like her. Dan
59 Impala Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 Well, I got the other color on it today and I'm kinda disappointed. You can't see the color very well and the hood looks like it has chicken pox fer some reason. Also, the paint cracked around the front emblem on the body like I sprayed it with lacquer. At first I was going to let it go fer a dip in the purple pond but I changed my mind. It's not a contest car and it's gonna set on the shelf anyway so I'm letting it dry until Thursday and then I'll spray Future on it and call it done. I'll post some pics up tomorrow. So, until then, keep up the good work guys. Dan
59 Impala Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 Well, here are some pics of how she looks so far. I'm still not convinced on keeping it this way or stripping it and redoing it differently. Any thoughts on this? The affect that I was trying to get didn't come out to good. I'll have to think about this fer awhile I guess. Thanks fer lookin. Dan
bryan_m Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 thats lookin great Dan!! love the color combo. keep up the good work cheers bryan
59 Impala Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 Thanks fer the kind words fellers. I think that tomorrow I'll spray the Future on it and see how it looks then. I hope that it pops the color after the Future is sprayed on. This is only the 2nd time that I've used "Kustom Color" paint. I sprayed the Frankinstude with it and I liked that combo, Aquarius Shift over Black. Live and learn I guess. Dan
Badluck 13 Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 What didn't come out good???,I think it looks beautiful and I really like the look of the hard top....
59 Impala Posted June 6, 2012 Author Posted June 6, 2012 Thanks Mike. The color just didn't come out like I was expecting it too. If you paint the Aquarius Shift over Black you get different looks in the color. Blue, Green, Purple and Gold in the sunlight. Over White the color doesn't show up very well. This is the first time that I've used this paint and I'm kinda experimenting with it to see the different looks I can get from it. Next time, I'm gonna try spraying it over a dark Blue and see what shows up. Dan
Badluck 13 Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 I understand now what you mean, but actually in just my opinion the unexpected finish turned out a sweet looking finish of elegance that just really suits this 'Vette,I love the finish, again just my opinion because I also understand when you are wanting one thing and another happens it does tend to eat at ya.....but I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
Hedgehog Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 You've got my attention on thi reconstruction. it's looking intact as if it just came out of the box.
59 Impala Posted June 7, 2012 Author Posted June 7, 2012 Thanks fer the very kind words guys. The final color is kinda growin on me. I sprayed Future on it last night and it looks a little better to me. I'll take some pics later today and post them. I was hoping to get this finished by today for our club meeting tonight, but that ain't gonna happen. I'll still take it to the meeting as an unfinished car. More to come after awhile so stay tuned. Dan
Danno Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Let me weigh in with the others: I like the color combination, too!
59 Impala Posted June 7, 2012 Author Posted June 7, 2012 Thanks Danno. Here are some more pics with the Future sprayed on last night. It looks a little better to me since I sprayed the Future on. You can see some of the flakes in some of the pics. Here are some pics fer ya. Thanks fer lookin. Dan
