realgone58 Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 (edited) Just finished this one up tonight. Testors One Coat Fiery Orange is just about a dead on for factory '77 Chevy Orange Poly. Krylon Almond for the interior and Landau top. Thought I would have to foil the trim around the top, but actually these things had painted mouldings to match the vinyl top. (Good thing I masked decently) . Thanks to Mike from NC, and CorvairJim, (here on the board), we traded , and I got the bench seat and caps from them. Firestone Supremes out of the parts box. A little foil work and it came out OK. For anyone doing one of these...........the glass comes in one piece.........cut the glass seperate. It won't fit flush as one piece. charlie8575 Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 That does work well. What did you use for the primer underneath that color, specifically the color. That does end up being very close to the Dark Orange Met., perhaps a bit heavy on metallic, but it does look nice. I like the wheel covers/whitewalls, too. It all woks very well. Charlie Larkin
mikemodeler Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Very nice build Al and glad I could help! Looking at that car is like taking a trip back 35 years ago, and now I feel old!
62rebel Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 i think that Montes only came in two colors.... that orange and a maroon! at least, it seemed that way where i grew up. all the Montes i remember were one of those two colors.... that came out really nice, and looks spot on IMHO.
Scuderia Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Anyone know of an attempted conversion for an open-hood version of this car?
Chuck Most Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Anyone know of an attempted conversion for an open-hood version of this car? I've seen the hoods opened on these for NASCAR conversions, but never a stock version. Should be feasible if you can find a suitable chassis, though. Very nice- toss on some Rally wheels and a few dings and dents, and it would look like the '76 version my uncle used to drive back in the late '80's.
realgone58 Posted May 3, 2012 Author Posted May 3, 2012 It's not as heavy on the metallic as the pics make it seem..........always looks better in person........I'm not a photographer. Charlie, I used my favorite primer. Dollar General Premium Miracle 2.75 a can..........I know it's cheap, but the stuff works great. Stays soft for a couple of days, so you have to wait to sand between coats. Good stuff however. Covered up the red this kit was moulded in, no bleed. and Mike, sorry, did'nt want to make you feel old......lol. I remember lots of these cars around too, we used to buy them for a couple hundred bucks back in the late 80's. Saw a bunch of them get run in the derby too. I remember, my dad and I went to look at one for sale when I was about 8 years old.(Metallic light green), He passed on it because it had too many miles (88,000) for the price they were asking (600. bucks!!) Wish we could get deals like that again! Those were the days.
philo426 Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Nice!Did you cut away the crude parts and put in a proper engine, suspension and exhaust?
realgone58 Posted May 3, 2012 Author Posted May 3, 2012 No, just a curbside..............did file out some crude mold lines, a few other mods to take away the "toy" look..........but did'nt go all the way with engine and chassis. I imagine one could cut the hood, use the chassis and running gear from the '70 Monte kit, and make it realistic...........but I do replica stock, have lots of detailed promos and such, so I chose to do it as a curbside. Post some pics of yours............looks like you've done a bunch of work there.
CorvairJim Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I'm glad I could help out with your build. It came out great! Now I REALLY want to do one of these things, but I think I'll go with Rally wheels. You're right about the orange paint - it IS a dead ringer for the original color as I remember it.
realgone58 Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 Phillip, your's looks cool.............great job on the engine bay and the chassis. Love the green metallic. I got a '77 Nova annual I did in that factory green............love the oddball colors. I know lots of guys like the Rallyes, but I chose the full wheel covers , because I'm wierd like that. My '77 Monte actually is wearing '76 caps. No one makes the '77 caps in kit form or in resin. Only thing that really makes the kit a '77 is the tail lights anyway. If no one knows Montes, they would'nt even notice. Anyway, it's all about having fun...................and keep the Monte kits coming!! (I'm actually a Mopar freak, but I love all the smog era rides!)
PARTSMARTY Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 THE LINES FLOW BEAUTIFULLY-CLASSY BUILD.I'M GONNA START ONE SOON W/ENGINE.
