Jon Cole Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I plan on painting my model in a Dupli-Color red metallic. I just wet-sanded the primer, it may get another coat or two of primer to deal with some imperfections, then in the dehydrator. I am wondering if a base coat of silver might be a good idea, even though the plastic is white? Would the silver help the red met as far as depth, and… ??? Is there any advantage to it?
Mercman Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Jon best advice I could give would be do the spoon test. Take a plastic spoon, and primer with different colors. Then add your main color, and see what works best.
Jantrix Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Id think it would depend on how dark the primer is. As always a test on a couple of plastic spoons would be the best way to find out your answer.

John, Some Reds are very transparent so the base color could change how the top coat looks. I'd go with the spoon test suggestion like the others mentioned. White, Bright Red, Siver, Gold and even Black can all be used under Red Metallic to give different looks. Try it and see for yourself. My Falcon below is painted Duplicolor GM Dark Garnet Red over a Black Primer base which makes a good match for 64 Ford Vintage Burgandy.
Roncla Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I agree with the others suggesting spoon tests. It is a quick and easy way to determine exactly what a color will turn out like before committing to actually painting your car.
Dave Van Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 This was more a paint test than a serious build....although I did like the results given what I started with. I used all Dupli-color paint. Light gray primer, silver and then strawberry red. I liked the results.
JamesW Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 My last 2 builds I used a silver base. It brightens up the final color significantly.
mcandela Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Hey John, If it's a metallic color you are going to use try putting on a coat of Duplicolor CHROME after the Primer. You will be surprised how it will come out.
