keepleft Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 with le mans running within the week and my confidence high I am going to attempt to build one of my favorite group c cars! I am sure most of you know this but this car is not the "more famous" 787b this is the earlier version and more successful 767b. (i plan to build both) In 1989 Mazda put three 767B's on the Le mans GTP class, all three completed the run and made a exclusive victory winning the first, second and third prizes. This is a Hasegawa kit, original release in 1990, the decals are good and everything seems to be good, the body does have a lot of sinc marks but nothing to bad! I really want to take my time with this model and do everything slowly and neat!
Mike Kucaba Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Yeah! Me too! Have this one since I can't remember. Hope the decals are still good.
martinfan5 Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I will be watching this one, I want to get the Tamyia one, but its hard finding one that wont cost an arm and a leg
keepleft Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 yeah I got lucky and picked this up on japan yahoo for about $35 aus and $15 shipping...I want to get the other 767b's with different decals and then the 787b's wheels almost done!
keepleft Posted June 14, 2012 Author Posted June 14, 2012 (edited) hey glenn, not in this kit not i wish! after all it was the rotary engine that ultimately won the race for the Mazdas! the tamiya kit for the 787b has the rotary engine included Edited June 14, 2012 by keepleft
ZTony8 Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I recently bought this kit for $15.I didn't even know it existed.I'll be watching for your posts about your build experience.
3men2s Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 i HAVE THIS ONE IN MY STACH, AND I LOVE IT OF COURSE WILL LIKE TO GET THE TAMIYA WITH ENGINE DETAIL, BUT LIKE THE FRIEND SAIS TO MUCH $$$. WILL BE WATCHING THE RACE AND ALSO CHECKING IN YOUR POST
keepleft Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 wheels got a scrubbing with 180 sandpaper to make them look more like race slick's. brakes got slight weathering with silver then dark grey lightly brushed over. the tire transfers proved to be tricky but they all turned out fine! I am extremely happy with the wheels! scrubbed vs non- scrubbed front vs rear wheel
keepleft Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 Dash is also done, took me awhile to get all the detail correct from photos, it was hard to find photos of the 767b cockpit, I am happy with the result let me know what you guys think. without decal with decal all together
Scuderia Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 thats lookin super. And a forgotten subject. Far outshadowed by the 787, You're doing it well.
keepleft Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 yeah it was out-showed by the 787 but the 767's were more succsefull not just at lemans but even the JSPC and daytona 24hrs. Still I wanna build both
keepleft Posted June 19, 2012 Author Posted June 19, 2012 not much of an update, so far I have finnished painting the body, sideskirts, and undertray, the windows and the dash these are the windows, masked, sprayed in matt black and the end result this is the body sanded, sprayed in primer then sand, spray, repeat!
keepleft Posted June 19, 2012 Author Posted June 19, 2012 undertray done in matt black side-panel, rear panel rear wing and mirrors painted
Scuderia Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Lookin mighty fine so far. Good stuff and very nice on the windows
ffreak Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Very cool !! I have this same exact kit myself !! What type / brand orange did you use ??
keepleft Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 I used tamiya spray TS-31 BRIGHT ORANGE TS-35 PARK GREEN 3 light coats of fine surface primer and 3 coats of bright orange,
Harold Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I ran this one in the 24 Hours of Lemans in GT4 a few years back, but mine was a black one I picked up in the used car lot.
keepleft Posted June 25, 2012 Author Posted June 25, 2012 I hate masking... I have decided to ditch the decals and spray the green/ black patterns, easier said than done! the hardest part was making sure I have every curve and line at the correct angle and to make sure it was symmetrical. masking out the green I missed the two little air intakes on the rear of the car and I ended up with over spray In front of the windscreen there is a black diamond, In order to use the decal and to make sure it lined up with the green diamond i cut down the decal and applied it onto the car as shown below. I then masked of the rest of the car to be painted black so I could match up the decal with the paint I applied a small clear screen (stiff plastic) over the smaller pattern on the decal, then the rest of the car was sprayed black! fixing the over spray issue the new rear panel the end result!! now I just need to let this body sit and for the paint to harden, there is still the two green panels to be resprayed as there is some orange/black over spray on these two parts. decaling will start soon as well as the masking and spraying of the rear skirts.. I really want to take my time and redo things I am not happy with,
