'08SEAL Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 (edited) Hey, I bought this kit at a Hobby Lobby. It was 20 bucks for glue, tamiya sandbag kit, and this kit thanks to a coupon. This kit is great except for a few minor tics. The cab and front fenders have mold lines that need to be sanded and the cab is molded incorrectly. Also, the instructions don't say what color to paint it, so I painted the engine red... This is the way I want to build it. Earlier today I found a red that I had and used for the engine, I thought it looked like the red from Texaco so I used it. It turned out great on the fenders I need another can. Here are the fenders painted red with no clear. I need to paint white on the body and cab then I will paint red for the front fenders. I also painted the steel wheels red from the fenders. The wheels. The engine and the light for the roof. Edited June 25, 2012 by '08SEAL
'08SEAL Posted June 19, 2012 Author Posted June 19, 2012 I also got the bed painted and have some etc. for the bed. I just need to paint the bars silver and I'll be done with the bed.
Dr. Cranky Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Looks like you are getting it all in order for a final reveal. Looking forward to more. This is one of my favorite top 3 kits!
cobraman Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Looking good. i would suggest using BMF on the rails. It looks good and would also be eaisier than painting. As I said, it's just a suggestion.

As I said, it's just a suggestion. I don't do bmf. It's just one thing I don't do. I just don't buy it and I don't do it. I just painted white on the cab and rest. I need the red on font fenders then decals and clearcoat.

Chevy Pickup looks very good so far! Paint job on the fenders turned out great, and I'm sure that this is going to be amazing build.
rmvw guy Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 I'm with you on the bmf Lane, I have used it and hate it. It never looks right unless you get it perfect and I have ruined too many other wise good paint jobs with it combined with the Exacto blade. I did a set of rails with foil and another with silver paint, guess what I like the paint better. I use silver paint or a Prismacolor pen with clear over. I am working on this same kit right now. Mine is green and black. Keep it going, I'm interested in what you are doing with the chain and other details.

I like silver paint and don't see the difference with bmf
W-409 Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 (edited) Of course it's your build, and you do what you want, and whatever you do, it will look good. I'm sure of it, your talents are great! But give it a try at some point, BMF is easy to use once you learn it, and it really makes the model much less toylike. Edited June 19, 2012 by W-409
rmvw guy Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Oh yeah Lane, a lot of the bed rails were actually painted black on the real ones. Just another option maybe. Anyway if you fill the bed with sandbags no one will ever know.
'08SEAL Posted June 23, 2012 Author Posted June 23, 2012 Got some work done on it. I only work at night for 2 reasons, New Mexico heat and my cousins are here and more coming tomorrow. The paint on the cab is the best I can do. I would repaint red and get it on the white, vice versa with the white. This is the pan for the bed. 21 sandbags, a bumper (weathered to perfection, IMO, with Dr. Crankys chrome technique.), a header, a tire, and a chain. Thanks for looking! All comments appreciated, rather bad nor good.
Casey Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 I would get rid of that chain, as it looks very out of scale...and roll those sandbags around in the NM dust a little bit to weather them.
'08SEAL Posted June 24, 2012 Author Posted June 24, 2012 I put some dirt in the bed and I painted the chain brown. Casey the chain came from a 1/48 scale set.
Casey Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Are the sandbags solid? One thing that catches the eye is the sandbags all look the same. A few random dents/impressions/folds to a few of them would add more realism.
'08SEAL Posted June 24, 2012 Author Posted June 24, 2012 they are pretty solid. There isnt much room to put a dent in.
rmvw guy Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Nice progress! That's a good size load with all the sand bags. I think a little road dust would help maybe. It looks like you are having fun on this one.
MachinistMark Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Looks good lane. The engines in these trucks were grey
'08SEAL Posted June 25, 2012 Author Posted June 25, 2012 I got a little work done. I still have all these sandbags! Got the wheels done. Interior.
'08SEAL Posted June 25, 2012 Author Posted June 25, 2012 I messed with them sandbags. I took my circular file and filed the dents FOr the bubbles, it was a mistake but I kinda like it, I put spray paint on it and lit it on fire. Nice show.
rmvw guy Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 I like it! Hope you don't get too carried away with the fire ( like I use to do when I was your age). Lol. You might really be on to something pretty cool here.
ARTEMIS1759 Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Looks good but the engine would be a grayish blue. I got this kit and am building a wrecker out of it.
TooOld Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Looking really cool ! Your paint is just fine , don't worry about it . The sand bags look alot better after the little fire , and the bumper ( ? ) painted black and yellow looks great .

The front bumper is what you see in the bed of the pickup. Its not paint either. Its a decal and I'm lucky it dried with a flat finish.
Dominik Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 (edited) Hi, the bed is looking great! What about the fire? have i "over read" something? One question or fingertip: if the truck is heavy load with all the stuff, have you thought about the stanc of the back wheels / axle? If it is lower in the back, it would look much more realistic Edited July 20, 2012 by Dominik
