There's your problem. If you're only getting your testes from your local government.

And once the gov't gets a hold of them, they never let go

You should see the prices, taxes and fees in Chicago!

Ooops... I just broke the "no politics" rule. Sorry about that. :D

While the plates here in NC might only be $28 for a renewal, there are other "fees" they get you with. For example, every year your vehicle is safety inspected and it costs $30 for a newer vehicle (1996 & newer, OBD II emissions), and then there is the personal property tax, which is determined by the state. They determine what your car is worth and then they assess taxes accordingly. My 2008 Toyota Camry with 143,000 miles is valued at $12,000 and was taxed $190 while my wife's 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe with 38,000 miles was valued at $14,000 and taxed $220, yet I could probably get more for the Santa Fe than the Camry over the "assessed value".

if our gas taxes were a bargain, it would be worth it but they are not! Luckily I live 2 miles from SC where gas is routinely 30 cents cheaper per gallon so guess where I fuel up? Yep!

Glad you got what you did for the General Lee, hopefully the buyer will realize how much work you put into it and cherish it as much as you did.
