Bill Eh? Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Here is the rest of the 'in progress' part of the story. In order to encourage the kids to build models, a great friend donated many kits to give to the kids. Here are a few shots of some of the kits! Here is a sample of various car bodies that have been painted. Here are a couple of shots of the engines after they have been painted by the kids. All of the pictures can be seen at: http://s1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc473/Bill_Eh/69%20Chargers%20for%20Portable%203%20Part%201/#!cpZZ1QQtppZZ20 A sample of the finished model can be seen in the Under Glass thread, which I am about to create. Thanks for looking in on this modelling journey! Bill
Dirty Gringo Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Thats great you should pat yourself on the back for this idea. Hopefully it will get them into the hobby
The70judgeman Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Those are some lucky kids to have you for a teacher and your friend with the donation of all those kits.
Bill Eh? Posted July 7, 2012 Author Posted July 7, 2012 Teachers had to electronically submit report cards by the first week of June. What better way to fill the remaining 2 1/2 weeks of school than to build models, especially car models!
cobraman Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 That is pretty cool. Nice idea. Kudos to the person who donated the kits.
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Wow, that's a great idea to get kids involved in doing something actually hands-on. You must also have the patience of a saint. A large part of my career has been built on skills and knowledge I began learning while building models as a kid......something my parents thought was a total and complete waste of time, by the way. You're doing a good thing.
Bill Eh? Posted July 7, 2012 Author Posted July 7, 2012 Jeremiah, I sure hope some of them take it on as an alternative to video related activities. Thanks again Andy. Ray, I'm lucky to have such a generous friend. Thanks Chuck. Thanks Bill. I believe that patience and teaching kind of go hand-in-hand. LOL
majel Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Bill: it's great to see a teacher trying to get kids involved in our hobby. I did the same thing the one year I taught seventh grade, we did it as an exploratory class (basically an elective). The kids really liked it, we had a little show at the end of the class for the rest of the school to view their work. Unfortunately we didn't get kits donated, the school paid for all the kits, glue, and paint. I donated tools and paintbrushes from my stash and all twenty of us had a great time. I only taught the one year at the school and unfortunately the program left with me, probably because of the cost for the school. I applaud you for your patience and caring.
Bill Eh? Posted July 7, 2012 Author Posted July 7, 2012 (edited) Thanks for the kind words Jim. The built kits in this thread were not donated. All expenses; Charger kits, tubes of glue, finger nail files, Tamiya acrylic pints etc., were all out my pocket. The donations my friend made were kind of like the icing on the cake for the kids. I like your Springsteen quote. LOL Edited July 7, 2012 by Bill Eh?
majel Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 You're a typical teacher Bill, always willing to purchase the items needed for your classroom. I left the profession after five years to start my own contracting business, but my wife has taught for thirty years and it always amazes me how much of her income goes back into the classroom. Once again thank you to you and all of the thousands of dedicated teachers.
Rob McKee Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Bill, what a great thing you are doing for these kids. 2 thumbs up!!
