uncle potts Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 I've never had any luck with yellow. I only use rattle cans, because I have no place I can paint indoors. (no paint booth, can't afford one right now, and the better half is VERY sensitive to the fumes). So what do I do? Other than paint my model a different color. I do admit the conditions right now are very poor for painting, !00 degree temps, and 80 to 90 % humidity. Any Ideas, cause I'm starting to pull my hair out.
Jantrix Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 What are you painting over? I always use a white primer beneath yellow.
Scuderia Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 I use rattle can yellows as well. And yeah they can be tricky. i use a $4 can from Home Depot. This is a random google photo but thats the design of the cans. I lay some down thin, wet sand then lay some more down. I used it on my Firebird Formula i have posted in Under Glass. This stuff's pretty easy to use if you keep your can warm and do good prep.
uncle potts Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 (edited) What are you painting over? I always use a white primer beneath yellow. I'm using grey primer, duplicolor, I've had good luck with it on everything else, maybe I need to try your suggestion of the white primer, can't hurt. Thanks Edited July 17, 2012 by uncle potts
madisonwoodsmith Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Paul, using a gray primer for a lighter colored color coat ia asking for problems. White for light colors and gray for darker colors and black for black. This will allow the true colors on your topcoat to shine. Using gray under yellow is gpoing to mute the brightness of the yellow and allow it to appear darker than it actually is. When in doubt about a primer/color combination, try it on a spoon first, and evaluate the results. HTH, John
cobraman Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 I almost always use lacquer however for yellow I use Testors enamal. It works good over gray primer ( for me ) . Longer drying time for sure but the last car I did came out very good without any time of clear or polishing. Good luck !
