  1. That is so sweet, my teeth hurt! Nice build, reminds me of my Dad's. He bought a used on in '60, grey. Loved that ol beast
  2. Thanks guys, I didn't know if it required special treatment or what. I imagine I'll use it sometime, but these particular colors are fluorescent and I have nothing I'd use them on in my stash. John
  3. I recently picked up a few Pactra paints for Polycarbonate in a bulk purchase on everyone's favorite auction site. Having never used them, I'm curious as to if they can be used on styrene. I'm kinda thinking that as long as the styrene is primed, it should be ok, but don't want to waste a good kit to ruined body. Does anyone have experience in using these paints? Any tips or things to avoid? BTW, these are in rattle cans, if that makes any difference. Thanks, John
  4. Nice ride, Eric. I'm waiting for mine to arrive in the mail. This build is also going to be my first attempt in detailing...wiring, plumbing and polishing. Hope it comes out as good as yours did! John
  5. Thanks guys! I kinda thought they were decent from all the pics I've seen on eBay, but I've never seen one built. It looks like I have something to look forward to when they get here. Hey Bernard, where can I get one of those engine stands? I had one a gazillion yrs. ago, but I'll be dipped if have it now. Got rid of all my 60's and 70's kits when I got married in '79 Sure do wish I still had 'em...sigh Thanks again gents, John
  6. I just picked up 2 of these on eBay for basically a song. I got a Chevy 283 and a Pontiac 421. I thought it was cool that they offered a couple of versions of these motors to make things a little more interesting. How many of you guys have used these and what can I expect for detail? Not all that fond of the "all chrome" idea, but I can paint to suit if I need/want to. What say the masses? Should I just relegate them to the parts box, of use them in a build? Thanks, John
  7. Might it be a vacuum canister? John
  8. If you have a "gourmet dog", those lil plastic containers their food comes in work well for all kinds of stuff. I also use Hillshire Farms deli meat containers for storage and stripping smaller parts. I also like to organize my spare parts in ziploc bags then store them in a shoebox sized tote. John
  9. Good deal, Nick. I also quit from 1982 to 1999, then went back to my "crutch" when I was going through my 1st divorce and the passing of my Dad right in the middle of it all.
  10. My main hobby is woodworking, then fishing, followed by listening to good rock and roll. Unfortunately I am finding I can't do the first two too much anymore, thus my re-emergence into modeling. Yrs of beating the hell out of my lungs is taking its' toll. Can't do the things I loved doing. advice to others: if you don't smoke, don't ever start. If you do smoke, quit now! Don't wait til you can't breathe anymore. John
  11. My Dr. said I had to listen to something different. Last time I did the head bangin thing, I ended up in traction for 4 months. Into more mellow stuff these days, especially Floyd, Zeppelin...late 60's to mid70's R&R John
  12. I haven't actually built a kit yet, but have a small stash of 40 kits and a few boxes of junkyard parts I got on Ebay. All tolled, probably $5-600 tied up so far, including tools and finishing supplies. When I do finally get back to building, I plan to do box stock builds at first and go from there. Now, my primary hobby is another story. Being a woodworker/cabinetmaker, I have acquired quite an arsenal over the past 35 yrs. I probably have at least $10k in tools, accessories and supplies along with another $6-7K in lumber inventory. Now, mind you, if I was a pro, these figures could easily triple. John
  13. Thanks Mark. Seems as my learning curve is going straight up John
  14. Ok, so what's the difference between buffing and non-buffing? This 40 yr absence from modeling has so many questions being raised...and I haven't even started a kit yet! Thanks, John
  15. Thanks a bunch guys. I kinda figured the AMT wasn't worth much and the Revell kit would offer more detail and whatnot. @Bill..Nice build! Does this not have mirrors? or did you delete them? Thanks again, John
  16. Been lookin for one of these for some time. Lots of them out there, but who makes the best one? By best, I mean the one with the fewest problems in fit/finish/assembly. I'm not as young as I used to be and haven't built a kit in 40 years or so, but got the itch. Thanks, John
  17. 1) 70 Monte Carlo SS454 is my all time fav. White w/ black vinyl top and rallies 2) 69 Mach 1 Mustang 428 4 spd. A buddy I used to work with had one and could make it do donuts in 3rd gear on dry pavement @60 mph! Had to check my shorts after that one! 3) 68 Mercury Cylone GT 390 4spd. Heavy SOB but cruised nicely at 110 mph. Had one when I got out of HS 4) 67 Chevelle SS396 4spd. My Dad made me sell this cuz I got too many speeding tkts and lost my DL for 6 mos. Never got beat though! 5) 87 Monte Carlo SS black w/t tops. Got one after my 1st divorce. Had it til I got remarried and had to trade it for a more practical D150 Van. Sure hated to do that but the Monte wasn't much for haulin lumber, just ass! Daily Driver these days is a 2000 Ford E150 van for haulin and a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee for SWMBO's grocery getter
  18. What is this "organization" thing you refer to? Really though, I haven't got enough extra parts yet to speak of. I do have several of the flat, compartmentized boxes for waht parts I do have and plan on more of those. In addition, I will have a 5 drawer plastic "chest" to hold larger parts like bodies, chassis and interiors, along with kit and paint storage. One day, I hope to have efficient storage lie I have in my woodshop...NOT!!! John
  19. Wow, Gunner! A KY vehicle with that much rust!? Looks like it came from Central NY! Good job John
  20. Got a set of IROK super Swampers to go with the 77 GMC 4x4 I got last week. Compared to the stock tires that the kit included, the IROKs are GIGUNDAH!! Looks like a suspension and body lift are going to be in my future. Probably gonna have to lower the plow frame too. Fun, fun, fun!! John
  21. Got me one of the Revell 77 GMC reissue kits today. Probably paid too much (eBay), but had to have it. Looks to be a decent kit, but I didn't care for the rims/tires that can with it. Ordered a set of IROKs w/Weld rims (again eBay) to beef it up a little. More beef will include a 454 engine to replace the stock 350. Here in Central NY, gonna need the extra ponies to move the snow! Also have to get some chain for the plow, not included John
  22. Anyone got their paws in this kit yet? Several eBay sellers have them for preorder due in July. and one I saw was selling them w/no preorder. Looking forward to this one. Tnx, John
  23. I surf ebay all the time and am seeing more and more built kits/glue bombs up for bid there. What's the attraction? Why would anyone pay for a built model when they can get a kit for sometimes alot less? I also see alot of old junkyard lots that have been painted, assembled and falling apart in pcs. How does one go about taking these apart and rebulding/restoring them? I did buy a 55 Cameo p/up a while back with the idea of rebuilding it, but practically destroyed it trying to get it apart. What am I missing here? Thanks, John
  24. Paul, using a gray primer for a lighter colored color coat ia asking for problems. White for light colors and gray for darker colors and black for black. This will allow the true colors on your topcoat to shine. Using gray under yellow is gpoing to mute the brightness of the yellow and allow it to appear darker than it actually is. When in doubt about a primer/color combination, try it on a spoon first, and evaluate the results. HTH, John
  25. Today was a good day. Got an engine detail kit and resin hood from Lex's Scale Modelling on the 'Bay. I have an 86 Elky that I will be starting in the next few days and I wanted to give wiring and plumbing a try. I've seen so many nice jobs here and am inspired to give it a shot. Hey, what's the worst that could happen?,,,cross some wires so it won;t start?
