KevinMoparFord Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 I am in Michigan all week for work. Any one know of any Hobby Shops in this area? How about any car cruises that happen on any week nights?
george 53 Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Well, It's i Yipsi but it's close enough to you, it's called "The Model Cave" I believe, and it's on Michigan Ave near I-94. Been meaning to go down there, but I just haven't yet. Reports from the guys in my model club say it's pretty nice, reasonably priced an they have a nice collection of oop kits, includeing JoHan and old MPC kits. HTH.
Scuderia Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Also, right on the Ypsi/Arbor border is a hobby shop called Riders. They are kinda national but a pretty down to earth feel. Lots of military and Tamiya. Great assortment of brushes too, if you're into that sort of thing

GREAT people, nice selection and price as well. I might stop by there tomorrow on my way back from AA.
KevinMoparFord Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 Found Model Cave and they are open tomorrow so I will hit there after work. I have been to the Riders in Grand Rapids and like that store so I will look for that one as well. Thank you for the help! Great to hear of spots to go see when you travel.
tim boyd Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Ditto on this end for the Model Cave - a must see. Rider's as we knew it no longer exists in Ann Arbor. The Grand Rapids and Flint stores are all that exist in their original form. Riders closed up in Ann Arbor a year or two ago, and one of their staff continued it on a small scale in a different location shared with another business. I knew the original two original co-owners of the Rider's chain and Chuck Helppie (mostly) and I (in the early years) helped them conduct many contests over the years as their chain grew across Michigan. They had a really good, 40 year run but the only stores that capture the magic of the originals are the two left in GR and Flint. Just my view... Best regards...TIM
Swifster Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 If you have the time... Whistle Stop 21714 Harper Ave. St. Clair Shores, MI 48080 (586) 771-6770 Great Lakes Hobby 43055 Van Dyke Ave. Sterling Heights, MI 48314 (586) 254-1600 Both are about an hour and a half away.
Kris Morgan Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 The Model Cave is a great shop run by people with a passion for the hobby. They have a good selection of kit. They have vintage stuff on the shelf from time to time. They also carry a great line of prewired distributor:).
Chuck Most Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 And of course there's Dean's Hobby Stop, if you feel like taking a litle side trip (about 60 miles from Ann Arbor, if I recall). Always well stocked with lots of cool OOP kits.
KevinMoparFord Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 Checked out Model Cave tonight. Very cool shop. Nice selection, everything from some Jimmy Flintstone resins, older issue kits, new issue kits, and some oddball paints. Has a great selection of the Alclad line. Very nice owners. Great place to stop at and will repeat visit any time I travel up this way to see what they have. Prices are all reasonable, not baragin, but not full retail either. Some of the older kits were a little pricey. No real old, old collectible kits like Johans or old 3n1 kits, but issues from 15-20 years ago for sure. Some unique pieces. Had a Lil' Coffin kit with skeleton, still factory sealed for 39.99, plus he takes 10% off of that. Almost bought that, but picked up a Tamiya Porsche and some Detroit resin guys pre wired distirbutors.
