martinfan5 Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I starting watching NASCAR around the early 90's, well thats when I can remember back too, so I was I would say 10 or 11 years old, I dont know why, but I came a fan of Ernie Irvan fan up tell he retired. So here are some of his cars over the years, now these are not the best builds, and all but one I built in the mid 90's, the couple of the Texaco cars I re did the decals on, and I am in the process of have been of redoing his skittles ride, I need to get another decal sheet again. I would like to one day start all over again and build these right. The Mac Tools BGN car is not finished
martinfan5 Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 These two I am planning on just starting over with new kits and decals
Scuderia Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Hey thats a pretty good retrospective! I like those, good stuff. For as many nascar kits as i started I don't have as many finished as I should that's for sure. You did well, keep it up.
iBorg Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 I do miss Ernie and several drivers from that era. I wonder if he had not been injured how his career would have turned out. Those are some great builds.
Dave Ambrose Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 It's nice to come across another Ernie Irvan fan. I like your collection of cars. I pretty much stopped watching NASCAR when Ernie retired. I never found another driver that I could connect with. The fact that we lived in Salinas and were friends with one of Ernie's high school buddies didn't help either. Have you thought about doing the hauler? I still see them around at model swap meets.

I dont have a favorite anymore, I like Mark Martin now, but not a favorite. I started following the drivers that took over after him in the MB2 M&Ms ride. I know what you mean, I became friends with driver that was full time in the Truck series, and after he left NASCAR, I stopped following the truck series, and couldn't go to any race's for awhile after words, I mean, I had to buy my own tickets again , I will give a hint who the driver is, he owns or runs Dillon motorspeedway in S.C. I did build the hauler when I was a kid, but have not thought about it, tell now, thanks for the idea , I have not seen it at the local swap meets, but I see it ebay all the time. Mike, I wonder that too, even after his wreck, he could still win , so I am going to guess that if not for the accident, I could see him winning a championship. But as much as I was a fan of his, I am glad he retired when he did, and push it, he left driving with respect. Edited July 19, 2012 by martinfan5
CorvairJim Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Here's an idea for a future build: The Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe he drove in his first Winston Cup race, which was also the final rcae EVER at the old Riverside road course. The car's sponsor was Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet, Inc. Dale liked the young Ernie's competitive spirit and wanted to give him a little help getting a start in the big time. He drove the car a couple of times with different color schemes, and I'd guess the decals are probably available out there somewhere. Here are links to images I've found for diecasts in both: http://www.friesench...0ernieirvan.JPG http://www.friesench...nieirvan87s.JPG

I had at one time, the #2 kroger pontiac Irvan drove, I need to do that again as well, I am going to see if I can track down both sets of decals. Edit, those decals are available , just found them Edited July 19, 2012 by martinfan5
bbowser Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Nice cars. I miss Ernie too. He was a heckuva talent, good enough for Yates to put him in that car. The same could be said of Steve Parks, never the same after that crash at Pocono. It's a dangerous game for our entertainment.

You are right about Steve Parks, he was a good driver, he reminded me a little of Irvan , Just like Irvan, Park was not the same after his big wreck

Here's another one you need to build, Jonathan. This is a straight out of the box AMT Oldsmobile. I'm pretty sure you can still find these on eBay sometimes. And here's a link to Ernie's record for 1987, his first year in Cup: http://www.racing-reference.info/drivdet/irvaner01/1987/W

bbowser Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Exceptional Drew. How did you get the tire lettering so realistic? They look great.
