mnwildpunk Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I'm working on a 54 chev sedan delivery and It is coming down to the headlights. the kit comes with clear lenses that you place on the body. My question is how should I go about making the reflector? should I BMF the back of the lenses? I don't think I can BMF the bucket so could I paint it silver? Any suggestions I would take into advisement thank you Dave
Jantrix Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 Find a smaller lense will that fit all the way inside with the inside of the lense facing out. Foil that and then place the clear lense over.
mnwildpunk Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 I don't have any extra lenses at this time but could I foil a piece of evergreen that would fit inside
mikemodeler Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I don't have any extra lenses at this time but could I foil a piece of evergreen that would fit inside That could work too! Give it a try and see. Maybe paint one side with silver paint and compare.
slusher Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 (edited) l have used silver on the back of headlights it works great. l have used white also. l use paint behind the lense...here is one l used white paint on.. Edited August 7, 2012 by slusher
Harry P. Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 The easiest way to do it is just foil the back of the lenses.
southpier Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 anybody ever us something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/M-V-Products-Lenses-L-408-Headlight-Lens-Set-3-8-Clear-/390444830068?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item5ae8534d74 and is there a tutorial somewhere for building Guide headlights?
Harry P. Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 The problem with MV lenses is they are smooth. Headlights have that engraved pattern of lines. MV lenses don't look very realistic as headlight lenses, IMO.
Casey Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 The trick with using an MV lens is to use a small one which replicates the filament and filament support (not really sure what that's called exactly, set the MV lens at the bottom of a shiny/reflective convex bucket, then place a clear lens over the top. The problem with simply foiling or painting the backside of the lens is the lack of visual depth which results.
Borgis Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 You could use one of these as a reflector. I don't know the English word for it but you sew them onto dresses and stuff. Just add a little "bulb" of some kind and use a normal glass outside of it.
