realgone58 Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 I've read some about clears and primers in the earlier "Let's talk paints and primers" thread, but I still have a question. As some of you know I build mostly replica stock, I use spray cans, and use enamel or laquer paints. Another modeling buddy recommended Duplicolor #T125 Truck, Van and SUV clear, but no one stocks it anymore. I don't think Duplicolor makes it any longer. What do you guys feel is the best, user friendly, clear that would work over enamels and laquers? I was also wondering if any one is familiar with the Duplicolor T125, would anyone know if it is the same product that they offer in another can...........like the regular Perfect Match clear. I just don't want to screw up a couple of paint jobs that could use some clearcoat, by using the wrong stuff.
Mike Kucaba Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 If you want a clear that can go over both enamel And lacquer the only one I'm aware of is Testor's 1261 or 1260 in spray. It is an enamel safe clear lacquer.
Jantrix Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Your best bet on clear is to use an acrylic. It will go over anything.
Jantrix Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Yes, Krylons Crystal Clear is an acrylic and comes in spray cans. And it works pretty well. Also there is a Folk Art clear that is very high gloss that seems to go over anything well too.
realgone58 Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 Duplicolor makes and acrylic laquer clear that I've been told works well too. I'm going to take some parts bodies and do a little experiment I guess.
Repstock Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Duplicolor makes and acrylic laquer clear that I've been told works well too. I'm going to take some parts bodies and do a little experiment I guess. This is just my experience, but a painted a Monte Carlo with Duplicolor primer, paint, and clear and it came out great. I painted a Cougar with the same combo (the clear was a different can), and the clear would not dry. It was tacky almost 3 weeks and 24 hrs in a dehydrator later. Obviously, Duplicolor clear lacquer over enamel is just asking for it. Just my 1/50 of a dollars' worth!
Guest G Holding Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 Last job I did was duplicolor acrylic clear...needed polishing for a great shine, I suspect it had a bit of blush from the weather lately.
realgone58 Posted August 11, 2012 Author Posted August 11, 2012 I contacted Duplicolor and they discontinued the old Truck & Van clear. However, they informed me that it is now called Perfect Match Clear, which is in the 8oz cans in the auto store along with all the factory colors. It is acrylic laquer. I tried it over Model Master one shot laquer and it worked pretty good, but not quite as good as the Model Master one coat clear.
martinfan5 Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I have used the Duplicolor clear now on last few builds, I like it, but it does not have the shine as some of the other hobby clear coats do
crazyjim Posted August 11, 2012 Posted August 11, 2012 I've been using Platikote acrylic clear over HOK paints. I thought it was pretty good, but now I've discovered that the paint finish on many of my builds has alligatored. I've since switched over to 2 part urethane which is much shinier than the acrylic stuff ever was.

crazyjim Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 No airbrush, Al. Get over to Harbor Freight with a coupon and about $30 for a jamb gun. Fatkidd got me going on the 2 part urethane and he's the expert.
sportandmiah Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 I use Testors enamel clear in the glass jar. I thin it with lacquer thinner, and airbrusher light mist coats until glossy. This works on acrylic, enamel, and lacquer. I do the same with Testors lacquer clear in the glass jar....thin it...mist coats. Works on acrylic.
