Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 (edited) NOTE: I changed the name of the thread because the name of the model changed. This one has rising out of its own ashes each time it's gotten very close to the trash heap. Well, here we go again with some styrene madness and possession. I got possessed once again watching TIPS & TRICKS FOR BUILDING SHOW QUALITY MODEL CARS by Donn Yost (The Instigator as I like to call him now.) I have always wanted to build this kit, and had it (luckily) and when I saw that I also had a spare parts AMT 66 Chevy Nova, and the 41 Willys by Revell, I know something was lining up . . . So here's what I've got going on. Initially I thought I'd have a street machine, but then gasser is a better fit for this build. We'll see how it goes. The 66 Nove tub fits beautifully here: Loving it already. I am using the 41 Willys slicks on this, and not the 66 Nova tires. The wheels I will be using are the 66 Nova wheels. Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 I knew this one had me by this point: When I was still thinking street machine I was going to use the T-bird front clip, but then decide GASSER! Worked on the grafting of the rear and the interior tub . . .
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 Oh, I can't get enough of this look: But those skirts have to go (right Donn?) and so they did:
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 I opened the hood for the impending scoop. Willys front clip and engine mockup . . . Stay tuned in for more.
1320wayne Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Looks good Virgil. The radiused wheelwells look good but I kind of liked it with the skirts also.
Greg Pugh Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I was nervous until I saw the skirts go. So thank you for that.
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 Wayne, I did too, but I also wanted those beautiful wheels and tires to show . . . Thanks, Ray . . . I have a friend sending me the engine from a 33 Willys . . . we'll see how this all goes. This is like my third gasser so far. I have to say, I really like building them. They are a blast.
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 I was nervous until I saw the skirts go. So thank you for that. You guys know more about this stuff than I do, so I am thankful a few of you are looking over my shoulder, and I now you will chime in if you think the old Doctor is running astray.
Danno Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Sorry to see the typical, ordinary, run-of-the-mill radiused wheel wells. I liked the look better before you hogged it out. But then, I've always been partial to short skirts! (And what they show off.)
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 If I had another body I would build a skir/no skirt versions. Unfortunately I only have one of these kits.
Jantrix Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Thanks, Ray . . . I have a friend sending me the engine from a 33 Willys . . . Looking good! I don't know if you've used that '33 Willys 427 Cammer engine before, but the blower parts are not cast well. You will want to find a replacement.
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 Rob, I hope to augment it with some 41 willys parts, and some other sources.
Greg Pugh Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Sorry to see the typical, ordinary, run-of-the-mill radiused wheel wells. I liked the look better before you hogged it out. But then, I've always been partial to short skirts! (And what they show off.) He didn't radius the wheel wells, he just removed the skirts. What gasser has skirts?
Sixx Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 That's looking pretty tough Doc!!! I'm diggin it!!!!
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 That's looking pretty tough Doc!!! I'm diggin it!!!! I could see them flying off down the track. LOL. Thanks, Derrick. I appreciate the support.
Sixx Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Oh man that's lookin sweet!!!! That's a BAD bird!!!!!
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 Does the roll bar look a bit too thick and out of scale? I wanted it to look sturdy enough, like good protection.
Jantrix Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Hard to say. Most roll bars aren't much larger than 3" diameter. I think it looks fine.
Kustom Rodder Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Just a little to thick and maybe a tad to high just my opinion Doc .
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 Mike, I think you are right. Which is why I went smaller and thinner. Your instincts, you gotta follow them. I will post more pics soon. Stay tuned in.
LoneWolf15 Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I would go with a smaller diameter roll bar here , a wee bit too thick for my tastes , Virgil . Rob , The cammer is well cast , problem being , it's been repopped so many times that the chrome is too thick . Once stripped and sanded , a little Alclad or metallizer brings it right to the forefront. Looking forward to the progress on this one !
Dr. Cranky Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 Thanks, Donn. Well, I fixed it . . . I am much happier with it now:
Kustom Rodder Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Looks right Doc how bout a front shot with the windshield frame.
