mnwildpunk Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Can anyone suggest some tape I could use. I have the smallest width tape I could find 1/4" but it's not flexible enough for tight compound curves or even slight curves for that matter. Any Help would be great
Shardik Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Check out the art and/or drafting supply outlets, and look for graphics tape. I recently picked some up in 1/16" width, and I believe it's available in 1/32" as well. It's a plastic tape and very flexible. I don't have it handy at the moment, but if I think of it later I'll take a photo of the package.
crazyjim Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Check out Line-O-Tape. http://www.lineotape.com/products.asp You can get the same tape from some hobby shops, but I found the least expensive way to to call Line-O-Tape. Yes - call like on a telephone. Order what you want. When the product arrives, you send the man a check. Worked very well for me. He carries tape as thin as 1/64".
southpier Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 not inexpensive, but good: https://www.tamiyausa.com/articles/feature.php?article-id=222 then there's the art tapes: http://www.grafsticktapeandlabel.com/
Roncla Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 (edited) hobbyLink Japan carries Micron masking tape. It looks and handles like tamiyas' masking tape and widths start at 0.4mm (1/63inch ) http://www.hlj.com/s...ng tape&x=0&y=0 Edited September 9, 2012 by Roncla
Skip Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 Scotch 233 masking tape is 1/8" X 60 Yd roll UPC 02120006343 or Art-Alternatives masking tape 1/8" X 60 Yd roll AA20170 www.art-alternatives.com/ I have both in my paint kit both work great. The other hint is to use either a single edged razor blade or small scissors to make relief cuts partially through the back side of the tape in the curve start out at about 1/8" apart and closer if the radius is really tight. I've made some really tight curves with 3/4" tape using this method. The back side may try to creep up but as long as the edge sticks tight it will work. Most of the time the backside gets more tape on it anyway so it's not an issue. Since you probably won't be using really long lengths you could use a sheet of glass, straight edge and razor blade or brand new exacto to trim down the tape to the width you need. Lay tape strips on the glass, cut the strips you will be using out of the middle part of the tape. you will never get the tapes edges down on the glass perfectly straight. So use the straight edge from the center part to make certain it's straight. Be aware that the thinner the masking tape the higher the price, you pay more for less material!
