Jzaaijer Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Hi, I bought the Revell 2010 Ford Mustang Convertible kit. It was molded in a gold color. I want to paint it red, because I actually own a real 2010 Red Mustang. I wanted to spray paint a white primer on the kit car and then a bright red finish color. My question is: Is the white primer going to make the red look good? Or should I try an Orange, or Yellow undercoat? I'm a newbie when it comes to spray painting.
martinfan5 Posted October 14, 2012 Posted October 14, 2012 Agreed with above Do a spoon test with the different colors as a base coat to see what one you like best
MoparWoman Jamie Posted October 15, 2012 Posted October 15, 2012 If you want the red to really pop out at you. Go with a light color for the under coat. If you want the red to look darker and not pop at all, then go with a dark under color under the red. But if the model is molded in yellow, I would do like the other member said, silver it first. Then I myself would do a white color and then the red over that.
CadillacPat Posted October 16, 2012 Posted October 16, 2012 Red paint works best over... you guessed it.... red primer. I would use White Primer for a bright Red colorcoat. Red paint has a tendency to pull away from sharp corners and the edges of panel lines making the color look lighter in those areas. Nahhh, if you mix your paint correctly and spray it from the correct distance, overlapping your passes, then no paint or color of paint will recede from raised edges or sharp corners. CadillacPat
Jzaaijer Posted October 16, 2012 Author Posted October 16, 2012 Thank you for your input. I like the spoon test, and the suggestion to buy the actual car paint, instead of model car paint. I grew up in Europe, and they have different types of model car paint there. there was never a need to use spray paint. The modelcar paint was a smooth as olive oil. Even if you painted your entire car with just a brush, you would never see any brush strokes, because of the oily paint, it evened out nicely. But the american model car paint is very different. The paint dries fast and always leaves streaks. Larger surfaces just have to be done with spray paint otherwise it does not look good.. I never liked spray paint, but I have no option. ButI'm not giving up! :-) Thanks for you advice!
Jdurg Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Looking online, the only red color paint I see for a 2010 Ford Mustang is "Colorado Red" with the paint coes of "D3, M7042A." There are many places online that will sell that EXACT color code in bottles or aerosol cans if needed. Otherwise, next time you are a local AutoZone or other automobile repair shop, you should be able to find the match you are looking for there if you look up the color code of the finish you want to replicate.
